The Boss PH-3 Phase Shifter is a compact phaser designed for use with guitar, but suitable with any electronic instruments. All pedals designed for guitar will be compatible with other electronic instruments, but some don't translate very well at all. This one definitely will! I've used it primarily for guitar, but have also use it on keyboards as well. The pedal has standard characteristics for a Boss pedal, with 1/4" jacks for your output and input and power coming from either a nine volt power supply or battery. You can't rack this pedal up as it's a foot controlled pedal.
UTILIZATION
The configuration of the Boss PH-3 Phase Shifter makes it quite easy to operate. Like most Boss pedals, it sticks with the four knob set up, giving you parameters for rate, depth, resonance, and stage, with seven different stages to choose from, which really adds to the amount of different sounds possible here. It should be easy enough to handle where a manual isn't necessary.
SOUND QUALITY
I love how many different types of phasing sounds you can get with the Boss PH-3 Phase Shifter. While it's not a master of any one sort of particular phasing sound, it gives you enough options to choose from to make up for this. It's not to say that many of the stage modes on here aren't top notch, it just goes with flexibility over anything else. I love using the pedal for subtle phasing sounds more than anything, but it's also capable of getting a wide array of more wild and spaced out sounds.
OVERALL OPINION
If you're looking for some bang for your buck in terms of versatility in a phaser pedal, look no further than the Boss PH-3 Phase Shifter. It's not expensive at all considering the plethora of options available to you here and is perfect for any guitarists rig. I've used a number of other phaser pedals out there, and while this isn't the best one in terms of pure sound quality, it's going to give you the most options, so unless you're looking for a really specific phaser sound, the PH-3 is more times than not going to be the way to go...
