    Great guitar with some problems

Gretsch G5120 Electromatic Hollow BodyPublished on 05/01/15 at 11:02
I never liked Gretsch guitars before but when I saw it I had to pick it up, and when I played it I fell in love! The neck on this guitar fit me like a glove. I usually like very thin necks with light strings. This neck isn't that thin and I now use 011s on my first E string and I still can bend and get good vibrato with it. The sound is very warm, especially the bass pickup. The treble pickup has a little less bite and is lower but not bad. I'll replace it though in time. The main problem I've had with this guitar is that it came with very cheap tuners and it never stayed in tune. I spent a lot on set ups and then replaced the tuners with good Grover ones. The main problem I've had with this guitar is that it came with very cheap tuners and it never stayed in tune. I spent a lot on set ups and then replaced the tuners with good Grover ones. It got a little better but still didn't stay in tune that well. Now about a year later for some reason it's settled in and finally is staying in tune. I don't know if I just got a bad one, but from other reviews I've read it seems that others have had problems with the tuners on this model. It is a gorgeous guitar and I love it now that it's staying in tune!
I play it through a 5 watt Bugera tube amp and it really sounds sweet!

Needless to reconsider everything, others have done before me ...

    UTILIZATION

I decided to post my opinion on this guitar because it differs much point on everything I read.
Precisely on the handle, I do not agree with the main body. I find it too late in the hand and also with a flat profile too ... On a guitar vintage inspiration, the choice of neck profile seems incomprehensible. But hey, this is a greater focus public and others enjoy ... Oh, it takes a little time to tame the floating bridge. Personally my guitar did not take the deal.

I solved the problem by carefully filing the gorges of Nut, the bridge, greasing all that the graphite mine and putting a (very) large drawing ... You must also adjust the height of microphones, pads, I can tinker rings pickups to raise the bridge pickup closer to the strings ... Well, it is the job of fine tuning but this is much better. Issues of disagreement were anyway not possible ... You can not spend time to agree. Today it no longer moves.

    SOUNDS

I bought this guitar after having tried among many others in store. I had never played archtop and it was the slap while I was rather looking for a solid-body. The sound is vintage arch, burning in neck and sour and very personal in the bridge. But it is the neck pickup that attracted me ... I play this guitar plugged into a twin reverb (65 reissue), and out comes a huge blues sound, rugged, dynamic and warm as I never had known. All the defects of this guitar, small buzz of the bridge etc. participate in its ... Once connected, it's roots ... How would you describe ... With a little overdrive, neck pickup, j ' feel I tease the sound of Alvin lee in the album Ten years after "recorded live" with the tremolo in the twin, I am at Neil Young ... I'm calm and play on the acoustic capacity of the body, explores the game variations on strings me closer to the bridge and I approach the sound of Marc ribot ... And this is funny ... The three play on Gibson when I approach their type tone ...

    OVERALL OPINION

After reading all the reviews about the quality of the mics, I decided to see if a replacement transfigure this guitar that I love. Hop, I found two Grestch HS FilterTron (alnico) and I started to work ... Result: the filtertrons are excelents is on ... Better defined and rich handle and less shrill in the bridge .. . But I lost the way that made me vibrate in this guitar. So I put my neck pickup and yet I kept FilterTron trestle, more versatile than the other, but I can not guarantee that I will not one day replace the gretschbucker (for blues Tuareg way of the Zairian rumba, or dirty punk ...).
So here we go! Not being a big fan of gretschs and folklore that revolves around, I chose this guitar for its sound, probably closer to an old Gibson as a 6120 Rocky ... and a little muddy course, but so hot ... I pointed out here that it works in my twin and the other amps, I do not know. Changes microphones concern those who want a more guitar "Grestch" in the sound. For others, open your ears. The sound is a little dirty but huge. Vintage wish ... Why will deliver cleanliness there? Rest the handle ... I love this guitar so I wonder if I'm not going to grow myself ... Well, we'll see.

5120 Grestch, it's not a guitar to yet another demo of mystery-train on utube and better.
It has its own personality and its not necessarily gretschienne deserves to take the other territories
the rockabilly. This is where it becomes great and gives meaning. For those who love hot music, a little dirty blues to Latin, African music and so on ...
Ah last major points: The neck pickup sends serious bass ... Very convenient for those who play in duo guitar / drums ... If you know what I mean ...

    UTILIZATION

    I vias be amber:

    The handle is it enjoyable?
yes the patent is really quite finished

Access to acute (recent freight) is it easy?

good to see the shape of the guitar are going to say that its available but frankly not easy.
Ergonomics is it good (in terms of shape, weight ...)?

the super light weight ergonomics is perfect for this model of Gretsh

Gets it easy to sound good? ...

And this is the drama .... What a shame such a beautiful resonance and microphones to spoil everything, even if they are of average quality that is still not tired mythical Gretsh ... a change for Jones Tv should do the trick ...

    SOUNDS

Are they suitable for your style of music?

I believe to be misplaced answer ca I play rock and blue so yes and when we bought a Gretsh .....

With what (s) amplifier (s) or effect (s) do you play?

A vox NITG Train and this is Rock and Roll .....

    OVERALL OPINION

How long have you use it?

    For about 3 months

How would you rate the quality / price? With experience, you do again this choice? .

So value for money at a cheap price new 400 euro frankly see 500 but not more seem to me to be a fair price

Gretsch G5120 Electromatic Hollow BodyPublished on 10/27/12 at 01:04
The Gretsch Electromatic series offers budget guitars that carry all the sense of class that the flagship guitars are known for. The G5120 is a take on the larger, hollow body electric guitars the brand is predominantly known for. The guitars body, sides, and neck are made up of laminated maple, while the fingerboard is rosewood. The electronics consist of two proprietary Gretsch humbucking pickups wired to a 3 way toggle, and controlled via a set of volumes and a master control near the bridge and a master volume positioned above the pickguard, as on the 6120 models. The Orange finish is beautifully done.

The electronics consist of two proprietary Gretsch humbucking pickups wired to a 3 way toggle, and controlled via a set of volumes and a master control near the bridge and a master volume positioned above the pickguard, as on the 6120 models. The Orange finish is beautifully done.

    UTILIZATION

The G5120's tuning stability is excellent, and allows for more than sparing use of the bigsby licensed tremolo. Gretsch's take on a thin neck has never carried much favor with me, so the wider neck of the G5120 felt very welcome compared the the other electromatics I've played. Albeit wide, the neck allowed for quick access up and down the fretboard and the cutaway did not encumber movement at all. The pickups are TV Jones styled and are underpowered to provide excellent, tasteful, vintage tones.

    SOUNDS

I played the G5120 through a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe III. I used the first stage of the carl martin plexitone out front and only the reverb of the amp.

The guitar paired very well with the fender to create many different useable sounds. The typical demo of this guitar will typically feature a rockabilly tune or something mildly bluesy, this guitar is capable of much more than that. The cleaner sound of this guitar makes it fit nicely into the mix of a two-guitar band. I use this guitar on a couple of tracks live and it really adds something unique to the clean and low gain passages in those songs. Using the plexitone, I was able to get percussive rock riffs and screaming double stops. The guitar is not nearly as nimble as my SG, but it can hold it's own when it comes to classic rock vibes.

    OVERALL OPINION

The Gretsch Electromatic 5120 is an well priced solution for musicians who want the mojo of a hollow body guitar. It handles gain fairly well, and is plenty more versatile than one might expect.

    UTILIZATION

This is a fantastic guitar from Gretsch, and it can be found for about $700 street. To start, it has a very nice, expertly-applied finish, and the fretwork is great at this level. The quality of craftsmanship all the way around is much better than most other guitars you see in the sub $1000 category. The playability is excellent, and the strings respond with a nice, snapping crispness. The Bigsby tremolo bridge is extra cool, and it makes those subtle chord bends and shakes sound just right. One thing I've always been a fan of is how cool the small hardware details are on a Gretsch - the knobs, switch cap, and strap buttons are just the coolest on any guitar, period!

    SOUNDS

This thing sounds like a dream. It gets that twang, that spank, that hollow-jazz bebop tone, and that snarl. It really excels at rockabilly, jazz, country, blues, and alt-indie styles. The pickups achieve such a nice, singing tone, yet every tiny bit of the attack is reproduced evenly. I'm not sure there's a guitar out there with more of a defined "attack" sound than a good Gretsch.

    OVERALL OPINION

Fantastic! At $700, this utterly smokes most other guitars in the range, even at guitars costing $500 more. The sheer playbility, warm sound, cool features like Bigsby and the small hardware, and the comfort of this axe make it a real winner. All this is not to mention how nice it looks! With this guitar onstage, a guitarist is definitely making a statement, and that statement is "I am classy, cool, and I have great taste in instruments. Snarl!"

    UTILIZATION

I've never played a round more enjoyable. A pure delight! It looks like velvet ... I also play on a Telecaster and it has absolutely nothing to do, it is even time to adapt to change from one to another. Of course, everyone will understand just by seeing her, it's not a guitar made for playing Satriani. Here it comes to savor each note, taking the time ... Oh, I forgot the Bigsby! Happiness in its purest form! It's so trippant you might want to use it all the time, at the slightest note! He not only throws, but also it is super effective, easy handling, its scope is wide and it does not tune the guitar, unless you go like crazy!

    SOUNDS

AAAAAAAAAAAHHHH THIS SON!! If you do not know yet what it is that famous GREAT GRETSCH SOUND, try it and you will understand ... Gretsch only have one like him ... A warm, round, velvety, deep and sustain that you will soon pass you ... A condition to accept a certain lack of versatility, of course. This guitar will not go anywhere. She has such a grain, such as personality and a look that will appeal above all lovers of beautiful things, beautiful sounds and retro charm. This is the guitar I play almost all the time in my indie rock band, and it sounds like a marvel in both the registry and quiet melodic pieces in violent and edgy - just know how to use ... Question amp, Gretsch and Fender is truly a winning combination. I plugged into my Fender FM 212 while transistor, clear channel most often, and it sounds really good. Well, sure, I prefer a Fender tube, but until the Hot Rod, well we did with the means at hand. I can not imagine what it would be a 59 Bassman or Twin Amp ...

    OVERALL OPINION

I bought a few months ago and this is my favorite guitar. It is not only one of the most beautiful guitars I have ever seen, but in addition the one I really enjoy the most. The handle is a delight, the sound is great, the sound palette is quite varied. It differs from the other Gretsch Electromatic Series! She has it all: the look, sound, class, style, character ... And the price is amazing for a guitar of quality and finish like that! Ah, the indescribable happiness out of the case at the beginning of a repeat and hear everyone exclaiming "waaaouuuuuh I can touch it?".

Changes after five months: that's it I changed the plate! Aaaah, it's really better! I bought the plate "Nashville" on e-bay, I had to cut the edges a bit since the pickups are bigger than an American, and I put away the transparent plate in the drawer. Result: she was already really beautiful my guitar, now it is even more beautiful! And one would actually see a real Nashville! I advise everyone to do that! Euuh ... though not in fact - I would lose my originality ....

    SOUNDS

At the I t frankly: branch of a vox pathfinder p'tit, she leaves a big impression of flatness. The clean sounds are certainly correct with a certain roundness that invites jazz phrasing and chord playing, but not going beyond. I wanted to know more but hlas via a microphone the other, I have hardly heard of Difference. It lacks punch and personality. Ct of saturated sounds, with the amount of gain I got vox sounds bold indeed, but lacking DEFINITIONS and characters. The amp is a little too responsible (the test may be MRIT a good amp for lamps crunch sounds), but I did not find the sounds that j'apprcie saturated with this guitar. But I think a good guitar amp sounds even on a medium. As in the previous ones opinion, I think this guitar lacks "real" pickups.

    OVERALL OPINION

I tested a half-hour store. It's a beautiful thing, just for the look I wanted. The comfort of the game is the finish is what one would expect for the price, nothing more. Unfortunately, the original set of microphones does not allow him to express great thing: ventail sounds (honntes anyway) is plutt poor microphones do not really stand the each other. This guitar did not sduit by the sound (I'm almost better memory of the Epiphone dot!) And for that price I expected a little better.
I did not buy, since I have not felt much in the play. Now I look at the ct of Duesenberg ...

    UTILIZATION

The handle is quite enjoyable, until I played mainly on a Stratocaster US whose handle is fine, the 5120 is half way between the sleeves Fender and Gibson.

Guitar pluttlgre and well balanced up a little space stepfather those not used to playing on a 3 / 4 cash (forcment volumineusse more than 1 / 2 cases of type ES 335.

As for sound, I first t just the lack of teeth, treble and midrange dcevants enough. BUT ... It was enough of a screwdriver to lower the pickups, and once more moves away ropes, all the Gretsch is back! Too prs strings, microphones dlivraient too serious. I strongly advise to the happy owners of this guitar rgler their same, the ear, the height of microphones, including improved sound when both pickups are together.

Once this small rglage performed there more that is taken to connect and Brian Setzer, Chris Isaak Manu Chao or according to your preferences.

    SOUNDS

I play both of Blues, Rock, Reggae as African music. I have a Fender amp transistors that gives all its dimensions with the Strato but does not heat lamps which suits this Gretsch.
That's no problem, a small lamp pramp Thomann bought 39 Euros and is played around the same time, I record a lot when I plugged directly into the sound card (M Audio 18/14) and pramp also works wonders. I use the Amplitube plug-in which a power coupled through the pramp, is more an illusion, it's almost like a "microphone jack."

I like the sound, warm, slightly greasy but coupled the precision of the attack, obtained with the two mics together. I just under the sound of each microphone individually, but trs subjective, I have the same frustration with my Start.

    OVERALL OPINION

I use it for 10 months. I do not like the transparent pickguard. It's really cheap, so I just removed.
This guitar is really nice, however, a victim of its manufacturing quality, glossy varnish trs is "new" for a long time when we are clearly in a universe "Vintage". I'm not going up the mess suggrer expr, though ...

When I make the Grestch 6120 (evokes above) the Owner ', j'tais so frustrated that I needed one, but not all costs. Being given that the US Gretsch sell between 2500 and 3500 Euros, I "pulled" on the 5120. They are opinions of users who amricains possdaient a Gretsch US dj who convinced me to risk it and frankly I do not regret anything (neither good nor evil ...).

For 619 euros at Thomann (the price has dropped slightly since then) I am satisfied with TRS, especially outside of rglages dj microphones which I speak luthier who I APRS have entrusted the delivery had nothing to do above, rglages "factory" taient perfect (neck, barely).

    ADDITION OF 9 XII 2010:

After a few times, I ordered the TV Jones Classic pickups on the manufacturer's website and I have it installed on the 5120. It's simply magical!
For info, TV Jones team up US-end of Gretsch guitars including the Brian Setzer. The luthier who I asked to change the pickups I was first taken up and telling me that if I really wanted ... Then once the change made it acknowledged that thundering c'tait trs. Of course, one of the 60 US Gretsch sound even better but for a significantly lower budget, this combination is satisfactory trs.
In any case, the TV Jones sound much better than the mini humbuckers home.

If you like me hsitez Electromatic 5124 with a 29, try bah, and you will understand my strong opinions. the simple version with microphones is really a treat. For esttique is a matter of taste, the color orange notament (available in sunburn) and transparent pickguard, me, I was not shocked. But even when the sound is most important, not the look.
Where is the great gretsch sound?

    - What type of bridge (Floyd, Wilkinson ...)?

Floating bridge Bigsby on. Caution hard rules for those who do not usually arrivergle and mine is like toilet paper, when the strings of the guitars I've seen toys with son worthier than noodles soft that I had al the factory, so I recomand the laying of ropes and a correct rglages in the state of the art prior to the purchase of the beast. Be careful though the bridge is a small mechanical noise in jou acoustic branch but not noticeable.

    - What are the rglages (Volume, Tone slecteur micro ...)?

A general volume at the top of the guitar, plus two volumes (one for pickups) and a Tone Generale down. The knobs are not effective trs Advent at least not the limit, or is reflected very quickly in 80% of the volume alone in a millimeter. The Tone is a little more progressive but nothing great about anyway.

Now everything else is happy that the handle is super enjoyable. I say it's the new version with the classic Bigsby not the one with the string tension bar. The quality of finish is superb and frankly I do not see the accused moidre make. The wood vibrates beautifully empty and I play as much as dry branch and the pleasure is different but great in any case.

    UTILIZATION

The handle is an ice rink is a wonder.

Just one detail the heel is thick and trs application used to go down in the treble but in any case it is far from trs stratocasterienne ergonomics. (In fact it is the zero level of ergonomics that level) but given the thickness of the body and the simple notch, no other solution.

I put a picture of the guitar pickups APRS changes, the bridge, pickguard, the sanding of the head and the creation of a false Binding around the head and Oues. She became not bad either!

    SOUNDS

Many believe gleanings left and right telling me that it was better to change the pickups. It is NOT KEEP. They are so beautiful is not worth of TV Jones not really see the difference (also adpend jou styles and the type of amp, because if it is to fuck a ton of distortion to discern good luck the difference) but for the price it's Super TOP.

Also no hope Setzer sound like a Marshall with serious donf. It uses an old Bassman on which he cut all the bass, and increases the presence. Once your receiver is set as you will have a better definition of the Gretsch.

It is in fact half way of his one true Gretsch but rounder, less slamming. Basically it is less typical than Filtertrons, but both inconveniant for those who want a Gretsch, but also
the advantage for most of the people looking for more traditional sounds.

    EDIT 02/11:

I changed a few months ago the microphones for true Filtertrons, radical change in her but to be honest, I mostly changed for the look and feel of having a true 6120. So I put a true golden plate with Gretsch Gretsch written in black lettering on it, and I bought the pickups on Ebay for a little while prs $ 100 ($ 70 including delivery for a two microphones great deal, and just 30 prs to the plate).

I also changed the default Chevallet who had to do a little vibration not embarrassing enough METALLIC branch. So I put a Rocking Bar Bridge with Gretsch, more problems and more beautiful and trs trs is adapted for the Bigsby.
So I used to put a nut in graphite avoid friction and thus can better maintain the agreement in return for vibrato.

Last thing I sanded ELECTOMATIC lettering on the head and put a sticker on the Brand G cot and it looks like he is really serious in mass as the old Nashville. Frankly the beast is magnificent.

The sound is more gretschien recess and light but I still have my first trial, the original pickups are good but if a good opportunity arises and for me to go make yourself a true Gretsch ..
In addition to the satisfaction of having done all the mods myself even more than compensates for the frustration of having only Electromatic.

APRS change microphones note a perfect pass.

    OVERALL OPINION

You can play any scratches on the Chet Atkins AC / DC, Rockab, Pop, Punk, Hard (note I did not say trash shred speed ...). But if you want the sounds randomly from Stray Cats, Neil Young, CSN & Y, Lou Reed period Velvet Underground, Monkees, etc. etc. etc. you go swimming in the very happiness and for the price of an unfortunately Ibanez you'd have to be made happy but the sound is not the same and there's no more Gretsch written above.

Basically it is simple trs Have you always dreamed of a gretsch and you could not afford to offer it to you and you'll be the man (or woman) on (the) happiest ( se) in the world with this guitar and you will eventually forget that you do not have the Brian Setzer 6120 to 3500 euros.

Or you dream of an ESP with active pickups and you will not read any fawn Jamis these lines.

Simply cents as is the case of the century if you want a box in his typical half and while with a Epiphone DOT you never have a Gibson, Here you'll get your Gretsch Although you

One thing surprising is the weight. It is very lightweight for a hollow body of this category, may be too much?

    UTILIZATION

Before connecting the beautiful, small acoustic test. It's surprising, a vibrating all over, and the sound is very bright. I really like the handle. Being accustomed to play on the sleeves ibanez very end I thought down on a log ... not at all, it is very late.
one thing surprises me, even shocks me is the precision of play I feel that this guitar will not make any "Kwak!" every note perfectly clear ... and always the p **** No vibration! what happiness!

the body forms a very gnreuses, and access to acute hence is not great, but was part of its charm.
Bon ben now be connected .....

    SOUNDS

First test, while the bottom knobs, micro serious. the sound is chubby, hot, but not as typical as a 6120. But there is always the vibration that never end, and are very Submitted in the sound ... I love it!
intermediate position, began a recall little grain fawn Setzer ... I chills!
try to micro acute :.... yeahhhhhh ohhhh! began to send it right!
after an hour of tampering on the guitar, and settings on the amp, gretsch sound I like it is finally the microphones are powerful as it should, the vibrations of the beautiful feel good on the amp, I'm falling in love!
I scratched the first chords of "Sleepwalk" Stray Cats fawn without releasing the Bigsby and the fever I win! it's beautiful, it's good ...

    OVERALL OPINION

I am offered the last week. I play metal / prog rock past fifteen years, and I wanted an instrument that could open the doors of the blues and why not jazz ... It was a great choice!
the incredible look of this guitar also had its weight on the scale, it must be confessed.
mine is a series 125th anniversary, a plaque and a gray instead of the usual piece of plastic (see photo on my profile) is much more fun and classy.
I bought it new in Germany for 580 ... so that the report is very attractive qualitprix ... and all that I would do this choice OUIIIIIIIIII eyes closed

this guitar is very well balanced, not heavy at all (unless a les paul for example ..)
adjusting the knobs could not be simpler and the volume is general practice to not stir up the neighborhood ...

    SOUNDS

This guitar is in my opinion much more versatile than the Japanese model.
the first connection, I found a huge imbalance in the output level of the microphone, the bass fishing was too sharp and were not at all, which seemed to confirm some rather mixed opinions, gleaned here and there quality of these micros.mais looking more closely at the micro acute was far ropes, so I tried a re-adjustment of the height of the microphones by lowering the bass and treble up to maximun and there, radical change!
I plugged into a Roland Cube 30 and honestly, fiddling with the models and the gain of the amplifier, it revisits all the sonic possibilities that can be expected of a guitar. that being said I think this guitar has more of a vocation or just plain jazz rock blues hard rock show, for the funky rhythms is not ideal because the humbuckers do not really sound snapping single coil pickups of good Start, normal ....
saturated in the microphone to give sharp well with grain and smooth as it should.
by setting the amp on the simulation tweed bassman, guitar pickups intermediate position with a bit of delay on the amp, is easily obtained rockabilly sound, even if it was not the big of twang Dynasonic ...
It is not necessary in my opinion to replace the pickups in this guitar ...

(Edit of 5/10/08): Good with a little more perspective I had to clarify some details ..
having had the opportunity to acquire a pair of vintage 59 (GFS) to cheap, I started in the replacement of the original pickups for a reference on their quality but also that of gfs (whose reputation n is more to do) and I must admit, although he thought that sounded very gretsch correctly it is true that after I install the V59 in the hands of another guitar! the dynamics and clarity of sound reproduction is really superior to gretsch, slamming his most found much better this famous "twang" that made the reputation of gretsch .. So small correction, and reduction of the note, if gretsch pickups are correct there is still a clear difference with a top quality .... QED, but the violin is very good after 6 months of use .. RAS.

    OVERALL OPINION

I play every day non stop for 2 months and I must say I do not get tired of looking, the finish is superb, the grain of the wood, varnish and color model are identical to the Brian Setzer, j ' I saw the two side by side in store, and except for 2 TV Jones and the bending of the hearing is not much difference ..
value for money is OK but not very Breathtaking view of the finish quality guitars made in Asia today.
the violin makes a truly excellent action pleasant and precise, this guitar is a real pleasure to play!
