MaKey MaKey and MidiMidi, custom MIDI controller

Here is a quite interesting project from two brands to convert any objet into a MIDI instrument or controller: JoyLabz and Feelyoursound.

First came JoyLabz with its MaKey MaKey PCB, a USB-device with 6 connectors to which are plugged cables equipped with alligator clips that hook up to any conductive objet or even a person (the system doesn’t require a lot of electricity to work) to send signal to a computer in order to create events (light up a LED, generate a sound and more). No special skills are required to use the kit, you just need to hook up the alligator clips, the connectors to the PCB and the USB cable to your computer.

Then, Feelyoursound developed the MidiMidi software that gets the signals received from MaKey MaKey and translates them into MIDI signals to send them as notes, chords and values. You can use this system to generate notes, beats and even control your MIDI compatible software and hardware.

The MidiMidi software can remap 10 “keys” and 4 banks, each with 10 pads, are available to organize the different parameters.

MidiMidi works on Windows XP, Vista, 7 and 8. It is available for 19€ and you can download a trial version from www.feelyoursound.com.

The MaKey MaKey DIY kit is available for separate purchase for $49.95 + shipping fees at makeymakey.com.
