Specific application-primarily for practicing classical, jazz compositions for piano-also for composing and arranging works for myself and others. Have also used for creating samples and original sound design. Due to pandemic, basically using this in my home studios at present-I have 2 8HDs I fully restored. Will use for live gigs, jam sessions.

Am an experienced keyboard player-have worked in professional bands, educational settings for live performances and shows as a music director, long-time user of music technology professionally and for my own enjoyment. Have owned many musical instruments-going back to pre-synth days playing electric pianos and Hammond organs. Keet up with most advances in music technology/computing and equipment-have several other classic workstations-I prefer keyboards that tend to be different but advanced. I own the Generalmusic Equinox, Ensoniq TS-12, yamaha SY77, several classic "beat-boxes"-the MC505 Roland and RM1X Yamaha, plus Yamaha QY's, a Roland PMA-5, have experimented with many auto-arrangers (not really my style) and now have several of the newest Casio Privia 88-key stage pianos. Have pretty good musical "ears" due to my training on various musical instruments, arranging and composition. So have tested many instruments-acoustic and electronic-prior to purchasing my used Fusions, and also research and listen to many instruments on Youtube, other user groups, I belong to several.

Pros and cons

This workstation has one of most well-supported, well documented user groups I've ever come across. www.alesismusic.com is moderated by 2 of the most knowledgable professionals I've had the privilege to seek information from. Big, big plus for something as complex and powerful as this workstation. Alesis abandoned this many years ago although InMusic in the US and UK still carry some parts and assisted me in restoring my Fusions. Another plus.

Polyphony-unbelievable how this allocates voices and resources-I have yet to come across another workstation that can support this many voices, for songs, multis (called mixes in fusion speak) and programs. This is a monster of polyphony.

Sequencer/recorder-32 tracks-only Generalmusic had such a thing-why I kept my Equinox. A little tricky to work at first-but can record like a DAW-audio tracks using the 8-input HD recorder, and 32 tracks of midi. Inputs/outputs are solid construction and TRS. The large monochrome screen-only the newest color screens surpass this-but this one is still very clear and easy to read. if it fails, it can be replaced or modded with LEDS, nice! I can do anything i need pretty easily from the screen and sequencer.

Sounds-called "programs" in the Fusion-I learned piano on Steinways-and have owned several digitals as these progressed through the years. This is so comfortable to play with the 8-key Fatar action (its a TP40-same as in the newest Doepfers, Nords, Studiologics and some Korgs-but the fusion had it in 2005). i can practive serious classical for hours-finally can work on Chopin, Debussy, Schumann and others which I could not get through happily on other digitals-the weight was either wrong-or too noisy-or not enough dynamics-this feels fantastic to me. All other sounds-this has audiophile specs in the sound dept.-and it sounds it-very quiet throughout the signal chain. Factory sounds were OK, on par with Tritons, Roland RD's others I tried over the years. But the amount of work programmers put into this over time-astounding. It is a chameleon-I have only begun to program this-and it already has sounds I've only heard in my SY77 for FM, the Hollow Sun programs-listen to the Novachord samples-I've never heard anything like this anywhere. and others have created literally-a history of classic synths in this thing. Stuff I've only heard on Peter Gabriel recordings-i have played many older machines including Moogs, the original sequential Pro-One for analog, heard the first Memorymoog before it came to market-my god-this thing-its made everything else I have obsolete. I knew it-I watched this one for years-read about the problems-the more I studied the Montages, Fantoms, etc. the more I was pulled to this-I didn't care about the cost-i wanted something really different-and this is. And it is a full-on stereo sampler-and the sampler inputs can be re-routed to the HD recorder with simple patch cords! Geez!

Now the bad stuff-it is heavy-but then the Kurzweil/ Fantoms/etc. with weighted actions are not lightweights either. it is very solidly constructed-all steel and aluminium plus Fatar TP40 thus the weight. Th pushbuttons might not be to everyone's tastes-but everything is back-lit, real nice for dark venues. This is an unorthodox design-but with 4 knobs-in a matrix can act like 16-takes a little getting used to. But then, even organ drawbar settings can be designed to work with the knobs, several organ programs include this function. The bottom curved shape is weird-won't sit flat on a keyboard stand unless you make some adjustments to how you fit it. Big complaint-Alesis abandoned the SATA outboard interface-frustrating because the electronics are all in there, but they did not create the firmware to activate it! it even recognizes my SATA drive in diagnostic mode-but you cannot access any info in the drive-but it has a CF card reader which works, but only up to 4GBs. Other big problem-if you don't upgrade to OS 1.24-which is readily available from the user groups-this was plagued with bugs-which is partially why it failed-maddening because the subsequent OS upgrades fixed almost everything except the SATA outboard connector-different loop lengths for individual tracks are there-syncing audio and midi now works-new DSP includes formant vocal effects and several others. another big complaint-which many users did not understand at first-I do!

Since many sounds are sample-based (equally many are not-FM, VA and PM sounds for example) it initially takes a few seconds to load the larger sample-based sounds-taking these off the hard drive-but then you can load any sample-based sound directly from the hard drive when you first power up-store it in a "mix", "song" or 'favorites" folder-now sounds will be immediately accessible until you reboot. When you reboot-these samples load all at once and are instantly accessible. If a sound is not sample-based such as the VA or FM sounds-these load instantly. And 384MBs sample RAM with expansion cards installed-maybe not as much as the newest boards with sampling-but not shabby. I've played 1GB soundfont acoustic pianos that sound no better than the HG Fusion piano-which uses alot less sample memory than this.

This thing is a monster-if you are looking for a very deep, perhaps too complex but very original sounding workstation-and are not too much in love with virtual software machines for music production-you might want to try one of these. If you are willing to put in some time, and have a good ear for music and sound design, I think you will be pretty amazed at what this thing can sound like. Join the user groups-you might need to, to learn your way around this-its not for a beginner certainly unless as a beginner you want to advance to becoming a sound designer and composer. Thank you.

Alesis fusion is a good keyboard, and I have used it several times. But there is a lot of room for improvement with it which is one of the reasons I actually didn’t purchase it myself (though I did think about it). One of the main reasons that I knew it wasn’t for me was with the sequencer, after coming from some of the yamaha and korg line of keyboard workstations, the Alesis Fusion sequencer just fell short to me.


UTILIZATION

Understanding the Fusion is pretty simple all of the functions are easy to find and they arent hard to understand either. With a little patience and some extra time you can figure this board out without any instructions in no time. I havent seen a manual for it and I was good using it in about a hour or so.


SOUNDS

When it came to the sounds and banks, some of the are really good. And some were not so good. But that is normal for keyboards, they will have some great sounds and then some that are not so good.
Some of the strings actually surprised me though, I didn’t expect them to be so full and rich. Even some of the brass was ok, but the bass patches I wasn’t a fan of. I felt they could have put more energy into really getting some good bass patches. It just seems like they over looked that part.


OVERALL OPINION

Its not a bad keyboard workstation overall, just the sequencing wouldn’t work for me in the long run. In the studio that I was in it was ok to use just for then. But I would take a yamaha or korg anyday over the Alesis Fusion 8HD. But the good thing about it is that the price isn’t as bad as the other high end models. So that’s always a plus for us musicians that cant afford expensive gear.

Well I have not bought the (just tried during a trip to the US), but in truth was not the c envy m missing:

the beast is really desirable: even imagine having a machine for a DX7 FM sounds, for an andromeda analog sounds, a sampler top quality while allowing you to do more physical modeling module type light vehicles from Yamaha (such as VL 150 yamaha card on the ground). it is a dream and then the keyboard is also nice (piano type keyboard similar to that of korg tritons).

In short you have a kind of OASYS Korg Alesis but the sauce with a hard drive of 40 gigabytes and 8 internal 24-bit audio inputs for recording external instrumentals.

Frankly the price or is sold to the states (about 1600 euros to home) is just arrived in stores that guys are already out.

OVERALL OPINION

I use it for 15 days. It's not super pro, but versatile and responsive to the needs of creative musicos did some stage. I tried the Oasys, it's better but I can not afford. I come from a Korg 05R / W Roland fp1 a PC and a planter out of breath by Acid and Cubase and plugins. I'll find all this and more on a single machine that I will still connect to my table and my Phonic dynamic Fostex speakers. No need to return the top dtails, t say everything or nearly so, but it is important to remember that this is dj version 1.22, and the number of programs and "mixes" almost doubled between version 1.00 and this one. Not bad! Especially as the sound signs "Sun Hollow" (all tlchargeables gratos for those who do not have) are really high bill, especially for lovers of vintage keyboards, it sounds really g ts!

I have since late November 2005. In other words I have 40GB of disk and not 80 GB, and I pay full price. Still I think it's a great investment. Rasht tomorrow if I ncessaire Well ... especially at the new price!

UTILIZATION

Let's start with what appealed to me:
nice piano keyboard (the purists will find it may be too light but for me it is nickel, a look and weight is impressive, very good sound, the side-Swiss knife / workstation with full functionality and especially the price : this keyboard was purchased in Germany (MusicStore) Outlet for 1 / 3 of its output value.

Now -:
I bought this machine to replace my Ensoniq ASR-10.
This famous sampler-workstation who had served for over 15 years.
I wanted to start again on a new machine, more complete and benefit from 15 years of technological progress also with a larger screen to facilitate the work ... and this is where the bottom lies. The Alesis Fusion, although comprehensive ergonomics has to wonder if the designers were not from another planet.
What is certain is that the engineering team used for the Fusion never used an Ensoniq or even a computer. I exaggerate only: ergonomics is absolutely not designed to facilitate the work and I do not speak the sequencer. It does not support sequences (or patterns). This design measures to be defined at all times is very heavy. Define measures to 01.xx.001 04.04.479 or something like that is really the kind of thing that swells.
This makes obvious usability issues including the use of the sequencer almost impossible in my opinion explains the commercial failure of Fusion.

SOUNDS

Fortunately, this machine still has potential.
The sounds are quite good and complete.
The side sampler allows for some beautiful piano sounds, strings, batteries, ...
Add to this synthesis modules and FM VA and you have some beautiful pads, leads, ... Where my Ensoniq ASR-10 had large gaps.
The 80GB hard disk drive allows you to add a large number of banks.
HollowSun banks are a must! But I also want to include banks vstream at very attractive price and high quality, PRK, and there are also many contributions: the community is rich on the web.
It's a good point here for the Fusion.

OVERALL OPINION

I use it now for about a year.
It suits me very well for the keyboard and the sounds.
However, the sequencer unusable forces you to go through a PC.
This is not necessarily annoying but that is not what one might call a Workstation, so you have to know.
And just for that reason, + ergonomics to sleep standing up, this keyboard disappoints me.
I wonder, or are past the 15 years between my Ensoniq ASR-10 and the Fusion?
Another bad point, it can not be connected by USB to a PC (noon mandatory) and four knobs and buttons PLAY, STOP, REC ... can not be assigned :-(
To be used primarily for his keyboard so nice and very good quality and sound.
For the price bought Outlet (~ € 1000 this remains a case) but at the cost sold out (more than € 3,000 it is a shame).

Voil that said, it's my personal opinion on this synth it sounds trs amateur hack if you do not have a minimum>> programmers who like to spend their night in search of his will no doubt their account .. . (I understand better why there are so many download on his site ... so alesis presets origins hum ... you understand!)

The Alesis Fusion Hd is a pretty powerful workstation for use producers and musicians. I purchased this product when it first came out on the market in 2005. I had the Fusion 8HD with 88 weighted keys. But no matter how many keys or which version of the Fusion HD board you purchase they are identical.

UTILIZATION

The Fusion HD by Alesis has taken the concept of most workstations to a different level, you can do a little bit of everything on this board and it even can connect to your pc with USB. It has expandable memory and a hard disk recorder. Most of these type of workstations are extremely expensive but Alesis has brought one to use at a great price that you just flat out can beat. I was extremely happy with my purchase of the Alesis Fusion 8HD, the value of it never really left because I used it for 2 years then I sold it, and almost sold it for the same price that I bought it for. That means that it’s a great product if it keeps its value and doesn’t depreciate.

SOUNDS

Sounds are pretty good, well rounded sounds. Nothing that really stands out that good to mention though. Most of the sounds are sounds that you can find on a number of different boards or vst’s.

OVERALL OPINION

But overall this is a board that you can do it all on, and still leave some money in your pocket. I just looked up to see how much this board cost, and it hasn’t changed since when I sold mine. The price as stay right around the same thing for the last 3 years which is great and that shows that Alesis creates a quality product. I have used several products by Alesis and I have never had a complaint yet.

I own the Alesis Fusion 8HD fair, 2 powered speakers Prodipe 8, a EH Small Stone phaser.

The keyboard is heavy (high weight), and the feel is light I found over a piano.

The connector is designed for sampling and connection to a computer via USB for example, or compact flash card.

Modern design.

For my level and my needs, this instrument is oversized and I run a few percent of its potential!

UTILIZATION

Ooh dear, ergonomics is fucking evil! you really spend time to understand, but once done, it fits what and settings come quickly.

SOUNDS

Through Hollow Sun banks or downloadable SoundFont convertible, one arrives at a rich palette and clean because the preset sounds are not very euphoric tell us!

What interests me is the sounds of the 70s/80s type mellotron, strings, choirs etc ... and there I take my foot!

OVERALL OPINION

hey, I'm not a musician, but I'm mumuse with a Fusion for a while, and I find his tonal palette of rich, personally. And what I do, I give him high marks overall, me, not musicos and I'm starting small.

I reproduce the atmosphere of the years 70/80, and Vangelis, Jarre, Kitaro and other synthesis dreamien tangerine ...

then, well, me, I can not read sheet music, I reproduce only the ear and I play the keyboard with 3 fingers up. I use the sequencer as a recorder, and I apply the technique of re-recording, track after track, when recording with the internal metronome.

But hey, it's sometimes not very accurate in tempo and the fingerings are not very attractive ... I'm not musicos, me!
