    VOX AD120VT Valvetronix Modeling Amp

    Vox AD120VTPublished on 01/25/03 at 15:00
I've been playing for good while now and needed an amp to do justice to my Maverick F1 guitar for gig playing, obviously a 15w practice amp wouldnt do it. I had intended to buy something by Line 6 because the ideal of modelling amps appeals to me just because of the sheer flexibility of the things. I found this was in the same price range and when I played it I nearly had a siezure. I paid £850 for it and got the foot pedal for free.

Pretty much everything. Unlike most modelling amps it has a built in valve pre amp which gives it a much higher 'punch' to its sound and stops it sounding like a bad midi file (a problem I noticed on the line 6 models sometimes). The 32 pre set channels are gr…

The 32 pre set channels are great and the fact you can have your clean set up geared completely differantly to your distorted channel is a huge advantage and allows for much more scope when playing.
Another thing that this amp has over other modeling amps I seen is that its effects loop (21 effects in all) is split into four seperate channels, which allows you to use up to four on board effects at once on top of your amp model selection.

The foot switcher is a little awkward to use at first and required alot of pre planning sometimes. It is still flexible but it could benefit from being about twice the size and having about 3 times the amount of buttons on it rather than having inidivual buttons doubling up on functions and having to change 'modes' etc. I would rather concentrate on my playing and have to worry less about how Im programming the unit from my feet. it also cant switch between all 8 banks only banks 1-4 or banks 1.-4. (equivalent of 5 - 8) which can limit it.

It's sturdy and well balanced, if heavy. The foot changer (despite being awkward as already mentioned) is pretty damn tough and as obviously been designed with the idea that people are going to be stomping on it in mind. Design wise its not very showy but it doesnt have to be with this kind of sound!.

If your intending on looking at modelling amps definatly give this a go, you might be sceptical at first but it really does blow all the other modelling amps Ive played in a similiar (and sometimes higher) price range away completly.

    - Amp Modeling (2 Preamp)
    - 2x60W
    - Stereo effects loop, can connect an additional speaker, stereo output, headphone jack (with volume control) and I think that's all;)

    UTILIZATION

The adjustment effects is very simple. as large buttons to turn or press. no menu or I do not know what the other stuff. It is very easy to optenir sound is sought quickly (to the limits of the quality of course) I'll be back on its lowest. With this amp I've never used the manual so I can not even say whether or not it is clear.

    SOUNDS

This is an amp very very very very versatile. It is possible to have any type of sound from blues, jazz, etc ... the big heavy metal. The major drawback of this amp (which I was embarrassed and that's why I wanted to change the amp) is the quality of some sound. Indeed for a good clean sound you have to fight ... Personally I do not happen to have a clear sound that does not crunch. This bothers me a lot because I know perfectly well what I want her and so it's Cleaire disappointed me. Side distortion and modeling, I could not really compare with the real amp (mesa correct, Vox AC30, etc ...) but if the models are very well done I fear that the MESA are really not well at all. At least for the big sound I've ever used modeling correct. Too rough for my taste and a presence that is lacking. As against the effects are of very good quality. Very easy to configure. Very nice.

    OVERALL OPINION

I used this amp about 5 months. At first I was really happy. Then more time passed the more I thought the sound lacked some work. The amp models have really changed much lately, but it still lacks sth .... (This is sth lamps;))
Obviously the price is really cheap! with all the possibilities that are available ...
Before this amp I had was a fender 60w transistor. I am very sorry for her its clear that we can not have with this amp. If the choice had to be rebuilt, I think I would buy something else. I think all of lamp. Besides, I sold it to buy a Mesa Rectifier head;)

pedal sounds are well as it should but it's worth not modeling amp
vox actually really put everything on modeling amps, other effects are only for the + I find, while line6 relies heavily on the number of adverse

vox but was completely right and for me it is the top face to the world

and another thing: the update, in my opinion not c for now, but no need because he has an actual grain compared with the competition, it it sounds really

    UTILIZATION

Simple, you just need a finger

    SOUNDS

Currently: the top of the modeling
finally c me on many personal and I know many people will say, yes it is a sponsor for vox, ET ben no, I'm just conquered

The simulation fender bassman and black twin jokes are trs. The simulation Mesa Boogie is really mean, because you do not feel low and stifling Submitted too acute.
For effects there everything you need without having a range of supereffets not used.
Nothing wrong for their quality, it sounds good but it's also not the top.
I put 8 because it makes me a bit *** ch to modlisation more for an amp.

    OVERALL OPINION

Voila 10 months I have and I'm delighted. I wanted a versatile amp twin, it is less expensive than conventional lamps amp, but its advantage is that it can do everything without the hassle of pedals etc ^ 1000.
What j'apprcie first is that raw sounds good, it feels to play on a real amp with a crude well, although I would say vintage, short practitioner.
on the other hand, fan effects of all kinds, I think the line 6 are better teams.

The selection of power (and 2x60 2x30 2x15 2x2 W) is a plus, it helps to play flat, low-volume RPET or live with a good quality.
Quality price ratio good enough for a good versatile amp.
Coupled with his 12 pdalier VC is the happiness in complete simplicity!
And then look at it I really like.
A little more than a line 6 Flextone 3, but it's worth it to extend a little money.
    I highly recommend it.

(I am not forcing me to buy their pedals)

    UTILIZATION

The configuration is pretty simple when you stay in the Edict of presets .... but can be somewhat hardue when venturing into the manual mode, given the peculiarities of 16 amps emulated (eg you must know that by adjusting the level of mid. that the we can push the gain final black2x12.). This is not problematic as long as it is based on the manual, it proves more difficult to find in french by region.
This amp can cover a broad range of sound.
The biggest failure of the config is that the e pedal control is not included ... (It costs and arm and a leg ...)

    SOUNDS

This receiver is suitable for almost all styles of music, good metal a little of hazardous and c but with a gibson mounted with active pickups surbobinés, it goes pretty good.
Emulations are generally more successful when you consider that it is a hybrid combo that tries to simulate the amps clean sounds clear, hi-gain amps with middles but overboosted amps at low cavernous.
I play with this beast of malsteem ausi well, of Buckley, as metallica ...
The effects on the other hand, without being a panacea, are sufficient in most cases but must be used with finesse.

    OVERALL OPINION

I have this amp for a few months and I love her ployvalence, good as cited by both sides, its main drawback is the requirement to buy the pedals (the VC12, not the plastic MIDI box) for to exploit his abilities on stage.
For the price (I got it to nine 426Euro) it really provides. Well, once bought the pedals ... (About 300 Euros) it's been a little worse but it's worth. It's close enough for some points of my cyber twinII SE worth three times ... and even if the bass are not the chosen field of vox, it's not worse than on the fender ...

Only the effects and some options are more twisted. According to the effect or amp chosen for the sake of Ralite Vox does not necessarily award the same function some pots. This is the case of the "Presence" for example, according to the amp ragira trs Different. But hey, if you use your ears, you will find the sound that suits you.

    SOUNDS

Well, I'll do as the manual, take the string to beginners.
    - The guitar is up to you.
    - The effects are not great at all I think. In fact set by the overdrive that I find very nice, and Wah (Vox proven in the field), the rest is a little soft. The Fuzz is really bad. I possde a Big Muff is the day and night, the effect has not Intgr potato is soft. So do not throw your analog pedals, on the contrary!
    - The modlisations amp. So the best I've ever heard, I'm Scotch. Accustomed to Guitar Rig and the V-Amp 2, no comparison is feasible. Here a large shipments, it's hot. Fender clean sounds and Vox are almost perfect, Marshall are excellent, and then the tricks of style and his buddies Rectifier dcrassent a max HP. The range of sound is standard.
    - The effects of modules placed in the effects loop virtual looked much (Chorus, Flanger, Tremolo, Delay ...) but I'm not a regular at these gadgets analog version so I do not know not sure what was true.
    - The reverb does not get carried away from the masses, but it happens.

Note that of course we can do a bypass of all these effects to be satisfied with the sound of the amp.

I pdalier VC 12, which is great, though relatively expensive. The pdalier (VC4 or 12) is of the same almost obligatory to take advantage of the amp. It is not good to change channels by hand in full play

I put 10, because for me what counts is the quality of the amp (the amp I should say), the effects are not all good, but I got high, because you can always use external pedals, and then adpanne.

    OVERALL OPINION

I like almost everything in this amp. on the other hand I live in an apartment, so I'm working on it in 4 Watts, and if the Master is already shipping a background too. At full power (120 Watts) take cover your ears, adcolle wallpaper.

Good quality price. on the other hand in three months prices have risen, so watch for. For my part I pulled over ads Audiofanzine (750 amp + the VC12).

This is my first amp, I jou of Guitar Rig, a V-Amp, the amps of friends ... but I found the shoes my foot, him and me for life.

    UTILIZATION

Operation is very simple. The manual provided is very bloody, very didactic, he explores all the possibilities so clear, and can immediately get an idea of. Getting a good sound, however, require a little effort ... In fact, the amp sounds good right now, but take charge when an AC30 is metal is a challenge, like a Soldano take control when playing jazz ... I mean, "16 amps", it means understanding and taming 16 amps, which is a certain difficulty. If I immediately found my marks with most amps "high gain" (JCM800/900, DSL2000, Soldano ... however I struggle with the Mesa Rectifier), I have a hard time was going on in the vintage style amps AC15 ... All orders are quickly mastering and general ergonomics are excellent.

    SOUNDS

I'd like to wring the neck of two misconceptions about the AD120VT, and in general Valvetronix ...

1 - Valvetronix amps are very good for metal. The models offer a whole range of very good distos, distos of spitting fat and '80 to the JCM800 distos square and accurate NuMetal of Rectifier and Soldano. I was able to find sounds kind Metallica, Rammstein, Pantera, Sepultura, Manson, Korn, no problem. I use very few pedals, mainly distos "pure" amps, and frankly it's already sending much of the wood. I was nervous to find myself stuck, and finally the Line6 Uber Metal I is currently in the closet, his amps with a much more consistent and rich.

2 - Where Line6 Flextone seek to reproduce the sound of an amp, the Valvetronix, them, not only reproduce the sound but also the behavior of an amplifier. Mean by that that the volume of the scratch button lets you switch from clean to crunch on most amps, and that the conduct "atypical or boring" to some bugs (like the treble / med / bass interactive correction ...) is reproduced. And that changes everything, because we have a real dynamic, extremely close to the lamps.

I use my amp with a Gibson Explorer with EMG pickups mounted 81 and 60. I get a range of its extremely rich, that sounds good, especially that rings true. I (re) discovered the sounds of old amps (Queen, Pink Floyd, Led Zep ...), and I took my foot on large modern amps with my guitar which is sublime. The only amp with which I ultimately evil is the Mesa Rectifier, whose "overflow medium" breaks my bu ... but it is a problem that I had already found by trying the case. I love the Soldano, however, that really bleed the eardrums when properly adjusted.

    OVERALL OPINION

I have this amp "has me" for 15 days, and I had practiced a little before. I was looking for an amp that sounds (very) well, with which I can play at home, that allows me to take my foot, and also allows me to make the transition from the "buy you with your amp for Jim Harley start "and" double body of death with which you will sign a pact for life. " I found this amp. I touch everything, I sort, I find the sounds, effects, and other friendly alliances that ultimately I hate, and I can have a huge sound without seeing land for the cops hype day / night ( the power selector is truly a joy).

I tried a lot of amps before taking this one, many tube (DSL401, Classic 30, F30, 50 Screamer, etc. ...), and most were ultimately too powerful for my room. In addition, they did not provide for the majority, satifaisant sound for the price it costs. When the transistor amps, even on very powerful, well toupourri sound, no dynamics ... The test of Valvetronix was a revelation: he had almost everything ... Huge sound, excellent ergonomics, lots of possibilities, the power switch, the look ... In short, it was him, and without regret.

I had all VC12 amp + pedal (the big metal, not the crap plastoc) for € 1000 new. I think it's fair because the sound quality and the number of possibility afforded by the pedals and effects. But for the "normal" price shop, about € 1,250, it's expensive.

Of course, I would do an update of that opinion after a few months of use, but now if I had to make another choice, I would do the same. This amp sounds good, it's a good way to get the ear, it may be appropriate to use a house / rehearsal '/ scene, and it is perfect for my use (a bit of everything with a bulk metal still ). And I much prefer to Flextone: line6 sound the transistor, they are cold and have a dynamic of shit. There, frankly, even the lamps are addicted impressed.

/ \ AFTER 6 MONTHS / \ That is, it's been 6 months I use the beast, so I just used to it, and I can have an opinion with a step back ... I love this amp, it really is the ideal tool for grateux who wants to have fun, which is aware of his level and do not want to believe that one day will play at Bercy. There's everything, it sounds good, it sounds right now, it sounds easy. It's nice, the birds sing, want a nice little song Gentillet? CL Boutique amp, acoustic pedal, a little reverb, micro serious ... The girlfriend broke by taking the dogs, cats, canaries and the car? Marshall amp '70s, the grain it takes to tickle the crunch, a little reverb, and go for the blues ... Your boss is a big fat con heavy and you have all day? Marshall 90/Soldano/Rectifier, gain a donf, and the late ... In short, I finally found the tool that allows me to satisfy all my desires. He follows my mood, when I want. Most importantly, it can be done by hand, and go all the tamper sounds, Brassens Sepultura, Bénabar to Placebo, Rammstein at Goldman.

In short, after six months, it is always 10/10. Because there is not 11 ...
