AKG D 7

The AKG D7 is a pretty good dynamic vocal mic that will give you a quality that you wont have to do too much with. Meaning you wont have to do too much boosting the eq’s or cutting them down because everything records pretty natural and is ready to go right off the bat. I think I had to boost a little on the high end just to give a little more clear sound to the vocals and more presence. I cut a lot of the low end out as I do on all of my songs because my voice isn’t very deep so there isn’t a lot of low presence in my recordings. But you will find that the AKG D7 is a perfect mic for the home recording vocalist to get a very good recording with out having to go pay a bigger studio to record them. Not saying this mic can provide the quality of a really expensive mic, but it will record good enough that your listeners wont know that you recorded it from home which is very important to me.


OVERALL OPINION

Overall, I am very pleased with the AKG D7 and think it deserves more respect because it’s a very powerful mic and its affordable enough to have at your house. If you are a singer with a lighter voice and not to heavy or deep this mic will work great for your. It will provide a nice crisp natural sounding vocal. One of my favorite things about this mic is you don’t have to have a full room treatment in order to get the best out of it. I recorded with it in my living room with just standard furniture (couches , etc..) and it did everything I needed it to do. The AKG D7 works good, if you can afford to spend a little more money look into some higher AKG Dynamic mics.

The AKG Acoustics D 7 is AKG’s current high end entry into the world of hand held vocal microphones. This particular microphone shares many of the same qualities with its more ubiquitous friend the D 5, however, there are certain key differences that must be noted, that account for the almost doubling of the price. The AKG D 7 is a dynamic microphone designed for hand held vocal use, and it was designed with an incredible focus on well balanced sound. The first thing to note about the D 7 is its Laminated Varimotion diaphragm, which means that the diaphragm of the D 7 has a thickness that varies across it. It is not a new idea, but AKG has implemented it at such a low cost that it is worth mentioning. This is apparently meant to enhance clarity. The D 7 has a supercardioid pickup pattern, which allows it to reject other things and reduce bleed. This was a very deliberate choice by AKG to not use a cardioid pattern microphone. At any rate, this, along with its built in high pass filter which rolls off the low end underneath about 80 Hz, allows the AKG D 7 to be an idea vocal microphone with a built in cleanliness to it. The AKG D 7 has a frequency response that begins at 70 Hz and continues up to 20,000 Hz, although starting around 15,000 Hz, there is a very aggressive roll off. There are a couple of peaks, notably in the low end and in the early mids, and a bit of a shelf boost around 5,000 Hz with a bit of a dip.

OVERALL OPINION

The AKG D 7 is a fantastic microphone, I have found, and it did produce a rather clear, neutral sound. It is nothing spectacular or revolutionary, but the microphone is certainly a fantastically viable choice for many singers who want to confidently assert themselves with style.

Cardioid Dynamic, must see the instructions

OVERALL OPINION

Used for 5 months live and Repeat. Male voice of reggae.
I sang earlier in the Shure: SM58 a (standard) and a Beta 57A which I appreciated much clarity, but the D7 is a step up. Very accurate, providing clarity without metallizing the grain. Feels very loyal, with a collection of mediums accentuated treble, which is ideal for my voice sounding a little too serious with harmonic when I'll get the fever. I happened to sing a concert with a Shure Beta 87A (great feeling!). I would say that D7 really comes close, and for a dynamic, it is virtually elecret technologies (that's my feeling as a singer anyway). In addition, it is very insensitive to feedback, you can really push a lot.
Well, on an aesthetic level, should not be a fetish of the pacifier, it's true that a little mass compared to a 58, but hey, it's the sound that counts, and I believe that it is much larger than a Neumann kms 105 ...

I sang several years with Shure SM58, Sennheiser and Samson.



What is so special that you love the most, least?

What I like most is the sound simply, very clear in the treble and the midrange and dynamic bass. Supports a large sound pressure (I sing of the metal).
What I like least: I thought it would be less prone to feedback that the Sure SM58 but ultimately it's the same ...


How would you rate the quality / price? With experience, you do again this choice?

For me very good, bought € 179.00 on EuroGuitar.com, it was worth € 70 more than the SM58. Yes I do it again this purchase if I need.


In conclusion I will simply say this is the best dynamic mic I had hands, forced to spend more time to adjust the EQ on the console, I found my two cents with this natural voice microphone. Also note that the packaging is excellent thank you AKG. In the box there is: A very good cover moullée the shape of the microphone, windscreen pop internal parts (in case you drool too much) and a clip to be sure you can ask our AKG D7 on a microphone stand. The microphone is very heavy, beautiful finishes, the grid is concrete =). Very beautiful object in my opinion, others do not like the look ...
