« Small but mighty! »

Amplification type:
Hybrid: two 12AX7 preamp and mosfet power.

Power output:
300W @ 4 ohms and 165W @ 8 ohms. Note that the internal baffle is standard at 4 Ohms to enjoy the full power of the amp (it can be mounted in 8 ARO optional). So we can not add additional baffle, which misses no, I will discuss this point below.
Connectivity:
- 1 Front Input, common to active and passive bass with an impedance selector on new versions of the amp, the oldest had 2 entries.
- 1 mono effects loop on the back, with a switch On / Bypass
- 1 XLR line level to attack a mixer with a switch to remove the earth
- 2 output jack for power

Settings:
Rather simple, from left to right:
- Selector "active / passive" for the input impedance
- Gain
- Bass - Active
- Mid - passive (only the boost)
- Semi-parametric EQ + / - 15dB between 30Hz and 12KHz (for each band there is a volume pot and a knob gain frequency)
- Treble - active
- DI level which depends on the Masters level (a manipulation is possible to make it independent but depending on the brand, it degrades the coloration provided by the amplifier and therefore has little interest in terms of sound)
- Master

On the back of the combo, a plate used to adjust the tweeter level with several cutoff frequencies for the crossover (height from which supports the tweeter sound).
There is also a reset button which is the safety of the tweeter. In general, a fuse must be changed in case of too high level, then simply press the button.
HPs:
- 1 HP 15 "neodymium
- 1 HP passive 10 "sub combo (responds to the pressure in the cabinet)
- 1 tweeter
Specials:
The combo comes with a custom cover, solid and well designed (the blank pouches for storing cables, sheet music etc. ..).

On the back of the combo, a Velcro been provided to fix the power cable during transport ... not much but it shows some seriousness in the design of the amplifier.

The handbook, hardcover, and supplied in a plastic bag with a really solid record of inspection. Again, this is not much, but it immediately inspired confidence.

By removing 6 screws on the back of the combo can be separated without a tinkerer's head is the amp for use with an amp cabinet. She st equipped with a handle on the wafer as well as 4 plastic-skates, like any amp head. It's very well thought out!

General appearance:
Very compact, very stylish. The grill cloth, handle and leather corners seem relatively fragile but participate in the retro side of the amp.
Weight and dimensions:
25.9 Kg on my scales
Height - 61cm with handle
width - 50cm
depth - 44cm

UTILIZATION

Plug & Play really thought the amp, just flat already sounds of thunder.
It's going to look for more advanced settings as it thickens. The knobs are very sensitive and can really handle regardless blur the sound. We must therefore move in small steps to adjust the amp. Like others I've tried Mesa, gain entry to a primary importance and this is the level that is played all the grain and coloration of the amp.
The manual is very detailed that reads English and each has its knob half-page explanations. I therefore strongly advised to read before tackling the amp settings to be as efficient as possible. Some settings "base" are also noted at the end of the manual, which may provide clues to follow.
I read in an earlier opinion that we should let the amp ground to take advantage of the HP passive. I do not really agree. I bought a custom flight case for the combo and I have been to test different positions on stage and at a ground height or even placed in the tray Fligt, the bass varies little. Moreover, transplanted by a microphone, this no longer has any kind of importance.
The black point of this amp is the fan on the back which is quite brilliant. Involved, it does not include the placement and seen at the rear, it is not transplanted by a dynamic microphone that could be put in front but at home is obvious. For that, I lower the note one point.

SOUNDS

Principally directed at the rock, I like to make short breaks, R & B Slap, Metal ... It still sounds! The grain of the amp is present but does not go to explore different styles of music. It is less typical "greasy / slimy" an Ampeg example.
The 3-band EQ can really shape the sound as needed and cover the spectrum from the combo is impressive. Particularly at low (even at low volume).
I use it mostly with passive bass but it goes perfectly with active in 4 or 5 strings. Just gain settings to be reviewed. I spend a lot of effects into it too and it sounds good, even with lots of bass synth chorus or light, it is still well audible and dynamic.
Moreover, the dynamics are really at the rendezvous are fun. Watts of Mesa are really not the same as elsewhere, it sounds hard to 300W and recently I found myself having to almost abandon the takeover of the amp on the sound system in a room that could accommodate nearly 200 people so the bass was present with just the Walkabout!

OVERALL OPINION

I have the combo for about a month now and I had the opportunity to work with in-residence with my group, so on stage, while working on the settings etc. ..
Before buying it, I played on Mesa M6 Carbine, and two 15 "from the same brand. I was looking for something more compact and less powerful while retaining a certain character and reliability.

So I have been riding head on a 4x10 "Walkabout", I had hooked. Otherwise, I already had at home Ampeg combos and Warwick. I could also try the Trace Elliot, Hartke, SWR (not combo on the other hand) but it lacked a little something.
So, the (only) downside of this combo, it would be fan (who probably changed). Otherwise, the report size / rendering sound is absolutely awesome. The sound is really go and leave me on the ass every time I plug the bass in it!
The price of nine, is high but justified I find the construction quality and seriousness of Mesa / Boogie. It's really high-end, each item is hand made and controlled, it gives confidence.

On occasion, we see spend time to time, and it gets really ok for the prices charged, especially since it is also a known brand to take for years without worry.
