« Interesting idea, perfect for practicing or emergency backup live set »

Published on 12/06/11 at 17:27
This Pearl Rhythm Traveller set is a really cool concept on paper. The traditional demands on a percussionist in the modern day world is one no single product could have ever bridged. For years I had to travel to a location where I could play my drums loudly and personally. In finding life in an urban environment awesome for work, it was difficult to setup my set and not anger the neighbors in the apartment complex. This set is out to solve that issue and more.

In a nut-shell, it features real wood shells, but a full 2 sets of heads, one is standard (and really crappy), the other is Pearl’s Muffle Heads which are awesome for private practicing. They honestly keep things quiet, and allow me to practice at any time of the night. If I had a new born baby in my apartment I would have no issues pounding away on my set without fear of the baby awaking. Changing between the heads is a really simple matter too, just a quick change of batter heads. The set compacts really well, it folds nicely and can fit in the back seat of my small car without issue, and maybe only 20 minutes to setup and play. The cymbal pads are nice and work great too.

There is not all good, however as with a kit like this that does so many different things, it does none of them perfectly. This is expected however, and while I wouldn’t recommend this set as the only set to play live gigs with, it can suffice if in a dire situation. The cymbals that come with this kit are horrible. Throw them away as soon as possible and get something better. I would recommend Remo heads for replacements of the stock ones right away, and new cymbals ASAP.
