    Electro-Voice DO54Published on 01/02/11 at 10:55
The ElectroVoice DO54 is a dynamic microphone that I've got experience using in the studio. It's suitable for use on the stage as well, but I've yet to use it in this capacity. The mic has a omnidirectional polar pick up pattern, which would make it good for live vocals. It's got a frequency response that ranges from 50 Hz to 18 kHz, which is a pretty full range of frequencies for any mic. It looks like the style of a hand held microphone and the one we've got at the studio where I work has it's own case as well.

    OVERALL OPINION

I don't know too much backing information about the ElectroVoice DO54, as it seems to be a pretty rare microphone. It doesn't have too much that sets it apart, which is most likely why most people haven't heard of it as I hadn't myself until I used it. We have one of these at the studio where I work, although it's usually one of the last microphone off the shelf. I've tried it out for a few purposes, mostly in a live session in the studio for backing vocals. I've also used it a bit on tom tom drums and for snare top and snare bottom just to try it out. While it was okay for the backing vocals in a setting where it might not have been super important since there's a lot of bleed in a live session anyway, I didn't love the DO54 on the drums. It's an okay microphone but really nothing to write home about in my opinion. If you have it around it's fine for extra applications if you need an extra mic here or there, but isn't worth seeking out. If you find one cheap enough it might be worth it, but again it's not the best mic in the world and doesn't do anything most other dynamic mics won't do for you...
