«  SOUNS On Sound: To infinity and sustain delàààà! »

Published on 03/08/12 at 01:08
The Freeze is a pedal Electro Harmonix nano that freezes at a sound played at the request and continue indefinitely while allowing play along the sheet thus created. This is the principle of Sound On Sound simplified and integrated into a tiny pedal.
This pedal is a little gem of creativity and enrich your favorite tunes perfectly. All digital, but the buffer seems to me entirely correct.
Supplied with 9V center negative PSU standard.

UTILIZATION

3 Operating modes selectable via a mini toggle switch:
- Slow / Fast: The sound played is sampled at the press of the switch and maintained as long as you keep the foot supported. The difference between the two modes is the time to fade in and fade out of the sampled signal.
A volume control knob that allows to choose the volume of the sampled signal from the signal played.
The manual serves only to parameterize the time to fade in and fade out of the slow mode, the rest is intuitive.

SOUND QUALITY

I use it with electric guitars, electro-acoustic and lap steel.
The sound is pretty good but suffers from shortcomings in the micro-sampling: the final result will depend very much on when you click on the pedal.
Layers are obtained in different background really does freezant one or two bass notes, or conversely an agreement acute, or by freezant harmonics or slides, there is much to experience.
Sometimes it sounds like a beautiful sheet of Richard Wright of Pink Floyd intro (Shine On, Coming Back To Life and many others), sometimes it sounds like Charly Oleg on a Bontempi or My First Piano Fisher-Price.
I recommend placing it in the chain between distos / boost / OD and the first modulation, it allows both to soften the sound a bit synthetic at times of the pedal (depending on when you click to sample) but also -and this is where it sounds great! - to work on his sustainé with a phaser, a Univibe, a chorus or flanger. In short, what is fun for hours.
I put a little flat for the footswich very noisy environments to create somewhat trippy in places with sound, it wastes a little, see ...

OVERALL OPINION

Received yesterday and tested for an hour so I will refine my opinion with use. This is my first pedal of its kind, we must say that it's still a rather peculiar effect without much competition.
Not use the supplied power supply, I plugged into a HB Power Plant with no trouble.
The price seems right to me given the opportunities offered by my stuff, the aluminum housing (I am easily impressed by the external appearance and that glitters ...), the power supply provided all the mess and electronic there on the PCB.
I ladle it since its release, I'll see if I get enough to use but a priori it is on my pedalboard for a while and I would do this choice without hesitation.
