Purchased in 1989 12960 F (equivalent to € 3,120 taking into account inflation) to replace my aging Ditton 66 (as compared to the younger competition, but not inherently), I always have in 2014. I was attracted mainly by a subwoofer down extremely low with great firmness, and a good quality of the rest of the spectrum.
I do not intend to change them for the moment. I just invested in a Sennheiser HD800 (value € 1200) to listen to my classical records at a level concert hall, as my wife can not stand the fortissimo of symphonic music.
By comparison, the sound quality on the headphones is slightly better, while there was an equal footing (and even superiority JMlab for serious, down below) with my previous headphones (Sennheiser HD540 Reference Gold flagship Sennheiser in 1987).
Given their excellent performance (95 dB for one watt) they can settle for a 20 w amp, which gives 108 dB at full power, in free field, and well over 110 dB in a living room.
