« Amp without proper »

Published on 04/14/14 at 17:10
Amp transistors, 100w 2hp 12 "... everything has already been said.

UTILIZATION

Very simple config: clean, drive, more drive, reverb. All controllable with the switch.

SOUNDS

Well then it should be objective about this amp:

Clean: The sound is super cold, dry, notes slamming and there is no sustain. It can still happen with a guitar double coil pickups, but with a Strat or Tele, this clean channel is simply unusable. Just good at busting eardrums.
Do not even try to put an overdrive or distortion pedal on this channel is atrocious. I tried several: the sound drool, dry, scratchy, aggressive ... we forget!

The Drive 1: where things are getting better. The sound is less dry, there is compression, and it was finally a bit of sustain. Personally I only use this channel. By winning at least one actually gets a pretty decent clean sound. It is a good base to add effects and distos.
Personal rather I play old stuff, rock and roll 50s, surf music, rockabilly, country, blues ... In these records there amp frankly takes the road well. Group is going well in the mix, no problem.
Amount in gain between 2 and 3, it starts to cruncher. It has its happening everywhere: not bad for rhythmic rock and roll base (eg Stones ...), or even more generic things (pop, variety ...) Again, for group play it hold up, the amp gets along well.
Beyond 5, the gain still more increases, but the amp is fast becoming chainsaw with a permanent background breath ... It becomes inaudible boiled in a mix. If you want a distortion about right rather put a pedal upstream, it will still be much better. If you absolutely want hyper lead sounds beautiful and well defined, buy another amp ...
The passage in Drive 2 does worse, not only the gain increases but the volume too, which makes the option useless because we are forced to rebaisser space behind ...
The "mid contour" is a completely useless gadget. It removes the mids and pushes the "chainsaw" effect even further. Excellent what ...

The volume buttons are hard to tame at the start: hyper abrupt change between 1 and 4, and very little beyond 5/6.
EQ is quite effective. This amp has the advantage of delivering a fairly full sound "way fender", ie rich in both bass and treble, mids and quite poor. If you like the sounds british full of medium to Marshall, go your way. Personally I put the bass 8, mids and treble at 5/6. But everything depends on the used guitar ...

The "spring reverb Space" is rather funny to sound a little rockabilly / surf. But again if you want the beautiful reverb Gilmour and Knopfler forget.

To summarize: 1 Amp Drive on, gain at least permanently, and nothing else. Upstream you put a proper multi-effect pedal or a few, try different distos and effects you want ... and taking good time are the sounds you want, in almost any style. To bring a little warmth and sustain the amp, always put a little compressor, it beautifies not hurt the sound (it really needs).

OVERALL OPINION

I have this amp for 10 years now, it works like the first day. And yet he saw chests and benches cars, the stair treads, corner walls, twisted knobs, of pees and vomit cats, hours and hours of oxen, rpeter and even some gigs (outdoors without transplanting sound with the volume almost to the bottom ...), the rain, sun, cold, moisture ...

The +
Big enough power for group play.
Strong, tough.
Drive channel 1 with interesting gain between 1 and 5.

The -
The Clean channel hyper sec.
The draft gain beyond 5.
The reverb corner corner
Mid Contour unnecessary
Weight! is a calf. It's been 10 years that I carry around and there I will never me.

Unbeatable quality / price today: This amp is easily used in the 130 €. For the price it would be downright difficult.

At the time I bought it, I was barely 20 years. Frankly, I took it because it was bigger than my friends amp and Fender because y'avait written above. I keep it because it sounds about right for the style I like to play, and if one day he suddenly falls down and that offers me the same for 130 € I repeat, at least to troubleshoot pending better.
But objectively it's still a very average amp when compared to what is done today amp transistors.

To summarize: Amp cheap, sturdy and powerful for group play, suitable for clean and crunch sounds. But not all the warmth and roundness of a tube amp, far from it.
