My local guitar shop had this unit in special and had been custom tuned to fit steve vai style playing, Perfect! I purchased it brand new for £400 after having £50 knocked off because it had been sitting in the shop for about 3 months.
The neck is extremelly slick, very easy to play on and the fretboard is superb for tapping, legato, sliding, bending etc etc It also helps that the action is lowered just right so pulling off these lead techniques was a sinch! For the price, the pick-ups are superb, excellent sound quality when playing lead and traditional metal. Perfect for live gigs but may need some tuning for studio recording. The weight of the guitar is nice, not to heavy and not to light so the natural sustain is great. Its small and doesnt get in the way when moving towards the 24 fret and the selecter switch and knobs are out of reach when doing these solos with your playing hand (but you can easily get to them with your picking hand) The locking tremelo system is also great, it takes about 3-4 attempts to get the tuning in place once new strings have been put on, since i purchased it back in september 2002, i have had 3 new string replacements and only ever had to tune it when i replaced the strings. Also the body is tough as hell, i have smashed it many times (hitting walls by accident etc) and only little chips of the body work have come off.
Things i dont like about the guitar are just the fact that you cant down tune it without having to change the action setup. Because i have my strings on a low action, dropping to D would cause the system to mess up and lower strings to vibrate against the fretboard. This is not the guitars fault, its because its been changed to suit standard tuning and solo'ing.
The body is tough and built to last. Its taken many hits and only scratches and chips have appeared, none of the hits have effected the sound, fret board etc etc
Everything stays in place as it should
I love this guitar, i would like to down tune it but you cant have everything. If you want to down tune, get a guitar without a floyd rose or change the action on this one before you do. i have had fun using this guitar and would recommend it to anyone who wants to start gigging or learn lead guitar
