With my setup, should I go direct?

I'm a bit new to this...

I am using an An Audigy Platinum Sound Card with front interface (1/4", midi and optical inputs). For mic'd input, should I just use XLR-to-1/4" and go direct into the Audigy front interface?

I figure, in theory, recording the direct signal will give me more options for compression and pre-amp emulation once the track is laid down, but should I be running through a pre-amp?

Moreover, can I even use a pre-amp with this setup, and go from the preamp direct to the sound card? Does that risk damaging the sound card at all?

Thanks in advance. I'm a bit green and would really appreciate any advice!
