Hi everyone ,
I'm Mahesh, from India. I'm a singer/keyboardist ,but a newbie to software sound synthesis. I own a laptop which is Dell Inspiron 1100, P4, with only PCMCIA slot. After I was impressed with the exciting world of soft synthesizers and their capabilities, I am now planning to buy a good soundcard for my laptop( which has a cheap inbuild soundcard now).
These are the things which i would look for,
1) Latency - I own a MIDI keyboard and i wish to get the least latency possible with soft synthesizer, in a live performance on stage. Btw, whats the accepted delay ?( i believe, limits within a few ms cannot be recognized as delay by our ear)
2) Quality - Of course, this is the main reason for going for a good soundcard.
3) Compatability with Linux - I am a software programmer enthusiastic about running upcoming linux sequencers and playing with them, Im excited about creating my own softsynth one day :-)
I am neither a gamer, nor intend to play hi end games in laptops in future.
I am not too excited about surround sound (5:1, 7:1 etc), as I am not interested to watch DVD movies in my laptop.
In short, my intentions are to compose music , perform live on stage and listen to quality music.
I am ready to spend up to 400$.
I heard a lot of good reviews about Echo Indigo IO. But would PCMCIA be an obselete standard soon?
Should I go for firewire? if so, i need to use the PCMCIA firewire adapter(1394a). But in that case, practically, would unnecssary delays crop up?( interface delays)
I would be really grateful to all your suggesions and recommendations,
