good home studio sound cards?

Can someone name a few brands of or actual external sound cards that have multiple analogue/digital inputs and that are of good quality? I'm not looking for the best or anything I want something I can start out with and learn with from my home studio that I am constructing.

Also I was wondering about Audio Interfaces like firebox etc. Do these interfaces replace or can they substitute a good sound card and do they allow for simultaneous multichannel audio recording?

Note: I am not professionally recording, although I would like to get to that point, so my budget is somewhat limited.
