The SWR LA 15 is a medium sized bass guitar combo amplifier that is probably best suited for practicing with and live shows. The amp is a simple one, without too much control over your sound. It’s got a series of ¼” connections for your main instrument input, a tuner, headphones, and a mix in for sending another signal into the amp. It’s got a single 15” speaker, hence the name, and I believe has 100 watts of power, although I’m not 100% sure on this. I believe that there is a newer version of the LA 15, but this review is for the original model.

UTILIZATION

Using the SWR LA 15 couldn’t be any simpler. It’s really got the bare bones in terms of parameters, with knobs for volume level, and a three band EQ for bass, mid, and treble frequency bands. That’s literally all that there is to the amp, so while there isn’t much control, it does make the amp extremely easy to use. Personally, I’d rather have the option of having more to work with, but for beginners I guess it’s helpful not to have much going on. A manual surely isn’t necessary to use the LA 15.

SOUNDS

The sound quality of the SWR LA 15 is about average, but is certainly more than suitable for practicing and live shows. I’ve used it in both situations, but haven’t used it for any sort of recording. It isn’t the fullest or deepest sounding bass guitar amp that I’ve used, but is still adequate in more situations than not. I’ve primarily used a Fender Jazz Bass with the amp, but have also used a Gretsch Junior Jet and an Ibanez SR-800 with it as well. I’ve also used the SWR LA 15 with a keyboard, which sounds pretty good as well.

OVERALL OPINION

For the price, the SWR LA 15 is actually a pretty good deal. It’s really a very cheap sounding amplifier, and doesn’t sound half bad even if you are not considering this. This definitely isn’t a professional’s bass amp, but for those looking for their first amp, it’s the perfect combination of price and quality. The LA 15 is definitely worth a look for those in the market for a lower end bass combo amp.
