Please help - Cubase sx

Hi

I just got cubase sx. i record a track on audio 1, but when i go to record tracks 2 (audio) it records what i am playing plus a louder copy of track 1.

how can i get this thing to allow me to record the track without recording what i have already recorded (if ypou know what i mean!!)?
