Problem using software synth with cubase LE

I have downloaded some midi drum loops and they play fine using standard windows media player. However, when I import them into cubase and set the mid out on the track to the microsoft software synth, there is no sound at all - even though I can see the output bar pumping up and down. I have tried setting the midi channel to 'any' or to a specific channel - it makes no difference. Any suggestions?
