hi,
I'm working with a couple of band recordings, and i was wondering where the magic line for correct volume lies? How many desibels? Is there any program I can run the finished mix through that adjusts this? Some kind of mini-mastering?

You want to push the final mix as close to 0dB as possible without going over. Never go over 0dB, and you'll never worry about clipping. Mastering involves applying effects, such as compression, to the finished song. its very hard to do and requires state of the art speakers. most people send their mixes away to be mastered. your job as a studio is just to make sure that the final mix does not clip (meaning go over 0dB)
