Hi. I'm just getting my feet wet in home recording. My friends and I rap. We've recorded before on my old computer using a mic plugged directly in directly to the sound card. I used Cakewalk. Now I have a new machine and I'm shooting for the best sound I can get on a small budget. Here's where I stand now...

Desktop
Windows XP Pro
Pentium® D CPU 3.00GHz
1.00 GB Ram
2 Hard drives, 160GB each
C-Media CMI8768 8-Channel PCI Sound Card w/ SPDIF and HRTF 3D Positional Technology

The way we go about it, all I need to do is record the vocals at as high a quality as possible. I'm really not sure where to go from here. Any advice would be helpful.

To be more specific, on around a $200 dollar budget for a decent mic, what should I look for?

Where can I learn how to better adjust the vocals? I don't need to be a pro. Over the last few dozen songs I've gotten better, but I know i need work in this department.

And, what other equipment should I work to get my hands on? About how much should I be looking to spend?

Thank you for any help at all.

Anyone with anything to say, please... feel free.

Or, can someone direct me to a forum that may offer a little more feedback?

Thanks.
