i hear the terms "balanced" and "unbalanced" a lot and i don't think i exactly know what these mean. does it have to do with left and right inputs or anything like that??
so, a balanced cable is a cable with hot and cold wires which have opposite wave frequencies? what about an unbalanced cable?

Erm, an unbalanced cable only has one inner conductor, so it all goes down that one.
Therefore there will be no noise-cancelling because there's no info to do it with.
Which means that any noise picked up in the cable will get into your mix.
The unbalanced cable has two inner conductors, of opposite POLARITY i.e. the signal is inverted in one of them, so that when combined, the original signal is restored, any noise picked up will have the same polarity offset onto both inner conductors, thus will be cancelled out.
