So as you see i want to make a home studio on my computer.
I almost in every thread i hear about audio interface, preamps, soundcards, software programs, studio monitors some multitrack and some stuff with channels.. But what of this stuff do i really need? It would be very helpfull if anyone could explain what i need and why i need it

I want to record:
Bass
Drums
Vocals
Guitar

btw i have a mixer "Behringer PMP5000 20-Channel Powered Mixer" can i use that for someting ?

So like the main point of this post is to find out what I need to record my songs. I was thinking about not the cheepest stuff cause i want very good quality. I have about 1500-2000$ to spend.

And if it matters I am using a brand new PC laptop
Thank you very much for reading
Kind regards 16DD

Well think about it. You need to find a way to plug your guitar, bass, etc into your computer, preferably with high sound quality. So you need a good audio interface, that meets your connection needs: number of simultaneous inputs (will you always be recording one intsrument at a time?), type of inputs (will you be using mics), and sound quality (high quality converter), midi, drivers (will you be using VSTs?) etc etc

The interface is key. yes you can still use your mixer, but first things first. Try reading some of the responses given on other posts about starting a home studio, or which interface to buy, like: https://forums.en.audiofanzine.com/index,idtopic,320243,mao,building_a_computer_based_studio_on_a_budget_best_options.html

Thank you very much for posting.
Yes i guess i will be recording one instrument at a time. Or is it better do like 2 guitars at the same time or guitar and bass at the same time ?
Yes i will be using mics.
What is VST?
What is MIDI?

So the only thing i will need is etc. Studio Konnekt 48 or M-Audio Profire and good mics ?
Do i connect the interface to my computer ?
Is an audio interface the same as a USB soundcard ?

Another question: How is it best to record drums ?

Sorry for all the questions but i just don't know anything about this :)

Whoa, that's alot of questions :mdr:

you first need to define your needs! those sound cards/audio intefaces are real killers, but maybe you won't need such powerful interfaces. especially if you're only going to do one instrument at a time.

vst are usually virtual effects, and VSTI are virtual instruments (like a software simulation of a famous keyboard)

Midi is a whole can of worms, but basically it's what allows you to pilot stuff on your computer with an external controller. (it's much more than that but that'll do for the moment)

yes it's connected to your computer, either by USB, firewire, internal card and breakout box, or just an internal card (in which case it's usually refered to as a sound card. the distintinction is sometimes not clear)

drums are one of the hardest things to record. to do it correctly you need multiple mics and multiple inputs on your interface.
