Help: MIDI to SB live problem

Just got a 5 din MIDI cable to 15 serial port cable. I intend to use it to connect my synth to my SB live soundcard. The problem is, i can't make it work. I'm using FINALE for music notation and SONAR for recording. I can't access the MIDI using my synth. I use windows XP. Do I have to configure something in my XP or SB Live Sound card? What do i have to press in my synth (cheap YAMAHA portasound) to transmit MIDI to my computer.) I'm open to suggestions.
