Thread problems with Digital Performer on Mac

I've recently bought some drum mics to record stuff onto Digital Performer with.I can, at times record drums and other stuff fine, but I find that after recording the drums, if I try to add, say, guitar on top, the guitar will be distorted and have a strange electronic echo (when it's on a clean sound). If I then try to record drums, the drums also get this sound. My Mac has 1GB ram, so I don't think it is that.
Does anybody have any idea what this could be? It must be something to do with the settings but I can't figure out what.
