- What characteristics have motivated your choice?
- For what purpose?
- What is your config (Motherboard / CPU / Ram / Hard ,...)?
- Which instruments and systems (console, preamp, DTD ...) you use it and how connections? ...

Sound card with I / O analog, digital and MIDI.
Compo dual core PC, 2GB.

UTILIZATION

- The installation is done it without problems?
- Have you experienced any incompatibilities?
- The general configuration is easy?
- The manual is clear and sufficient? ...

Installation complicated because the motherboard of my PC was not compatible with PT.

It is imperative to follow the instructions for installation of DIGI, and to check the compatibility of your config on the Digi site before purchase. This time everything is very clear on their site, it is rather a good point.

GETTING STARTED

- The drivers are stable?
- Are they often updated?
- What software do you use most often?
- What you get lag?
- How many tracks you get to record / play time? ...

The drivers are fairly stable but the software and Mbox are closed, buy this product is to enter a world apart, with lots of incompatibilities (incompatibilities with the installation of the software with some PCs, but also limited compatibility with other than the Digidesign DSP cards (UAD / PowerCore), some vst plugins, other sound cards market ...), it's not a problem in itself but it is frustrating for a home studio with limited resources.
Some shortcomings make this product really painful to use: no automatic compensation of latency, a lot of small incompatibilities with right to left I discovered the As ...

Note that I'm on PC, maybe the Mac is better.

Brief for the post production is a good product, but to compose music in home studio there are more appropriate.

OVERALL OPINION

- How long have you use it?
- What is so special that you like most and least?
- Have you tried many other models before buying it?
- How would you rate the quality / price?
- With experience, you do again this choice? ...

What I like most is the simplicity of the software and advanced features for editing audio, but I do not really use, I've mostly of components with the software and clearly vst n is not very suitable for that. Requires an understanding of their needs and what brings this product before buying it, or Digi sells it as an all-in-one for the home studio, which is far from the case to use.

What I like least is the fact that the software is so closed and so inconsistent with the rest of the market in software or hardware, every day it gets really heavy and restrictive to use. I think DIGI plays on the ambiguity with Protools HD and its commercial clout (ads in magazines, highlighting the product in stores, training ...) with a reassuring at first but the mask Actually, for use in home studio there are products more suitable and enjoyable to use.

The price / quality ratio is not as good as this, the base is not expensive, however, Mbox + Protools LE is more limited than it seems, even for basic use. For the same price you can easily have better and more functional. Digi makes it is almost indispensable to purchase options and more to use it with a minimum of comfort and efficiency. If you buy a dedicated PC, the Music Production Toolkit, and are willing to work with Digidesign apps almost exclusively, I think it gets interesting.

Eventually we find ourselves obliged to purchase other Digidesign products to expand its config a bit, and it's going, the more locked up in this solution without necessarily find his account, especially when compared with that propose to other vendor ...

With the experience I would do not have that choice, this solution is too closed for use at home, making it too heavy to use, rather headlock and not very scalable. I find that there is nothing very special about this solution that really justifies its purchase due to the heaviness of the system, its constraints and incompatibilities, and the quality of the whole, if not Protools brand ...

The competition offers intermediates really powerful, open, consistent, leaving the user free to change his home studio as he sees fit, according to his needs. Basically when you have a protools it is blocked, and you look at what's new out on the market without being able to use CAM because it is still compatible on paper but often fair game for use, not so frustrating .. .

Once again I'm on PC, maybe it's heaven on a Mac, I do not know.

The problem is that the consumer market is different from the pro market, and with the home studio digidesign solutions, we are left with something rather less efficient, more complicated, more demanding than what the competition offers, what interest? Especially in the end it is rather expensive, so how is this justified?

If it still put a slap to other solutions on the market ... but this is quite the opposite ...

In short, everything depends on the user need to prod the post I put 9 / 10.
For the composition, I put 3 / 10. If you buy options and softs digidesign I go to complete the score between 5 / 10 and 7 / 10 depending on options.

EDIT November 2010 with the release of Protools 9, I think the above is out of date, particularly in terms of the restrictions mentioned about PT. A test then.
