« Line 6 Guitar Port »
Published on 04/22/02 at 15:00I paid $179 locally in Austin.
The GuitarPort gave me trouble-free installation on my Windows 2000 PC, a terrific user interface, and sounds that are wildly better and more varied than I expect.
I get no clicks or pops, just tons of great sounds that are putting a serious dent in my schedule. I haven't had this much fun with a guitar in years.
The latency is very low -- undetectable to me. For a USB-based system, that's remarkable.
I sympathize with the other reviewer who had trouble with his 400MZ PC, but the GuitarPort has performed flawlessly on my 1GZ ASUS/Athlon motherboard. A lot of other USB-based audio gear has been troublesome on my PC, so the GuitarPort seems brilliant.
The GuitarPort doesn't have an ASIO driver, and wasn't really designed with home-recording in mind.
Line6 is working on an ASIO driver, but I'm not hopeful since the unit periodically takes 40% of my CPU. That may not leave enough horsepower for a good ASIO package like Cubase.
I also have a fast laptop, so I'll probably run the GuitarPort on that and feed the audio to my PC, where Cubase will run. Clunky, but it should work.
Excellent and amusing.
Terrific sounds and a low price -- nice job, Line6.
