« Line 6 Guitar Port »
Published on 12/08/02 at 15:00This effects processor was purchased at Guitar Center for $169. I was primarily interested in a processor that had a good computer interface for home studio use.. multi-track recording.
Using the Guitar Port is fairly intuitive. Also, saving particular configurations is a simple file-save operation. Generally, the quality of the effects are good. The tuner works well.
This effects box really misses the mark for any home studio use. It does not work properly with other multi-track applications such as CoolEdit or Guitar Tracks. Also, it is a real CPU "hog".. which bogged down an IBM 1GHz laptop with 512M of RAM, causing occasional "drop-outs". The CD player function works OK, but you cannot modify any effects settings during play. Also, the lower portion of the screen is dedicated to advertising their internet "jam along" stuff. Seems like that display space could be used much better for displaying relevant effects information, etc. How is it that you can download effects presets for the POD, but Line6 doesn't offer that for the Guitar Port unless you join that monthly service? Poor strategy. Overall, this product seems like a good idea at the right price... but executed poorly.
Construction seems fine. The volume knob is a rather silly design.
Unless Line6 offers a significant revision to the current product, I'd recommend getting some other product for home studio use. If you do want to give it a try, be sure you can return it for a full refund.
