RME Direct USB Recording for Fireface UFX

The Fireface UFX has been updated with a new feature: an integrated digital recorder for all inputs and outputs directly to USB memory devices via the front USB port.

The UFX records on USB thumb drives or hard drives with up to 2 TB capacity.

The recording functionality is provided by the internal DSP, and is therefore independent from a connected Windows or Mac computer.

The new addition converts the Fireface UFX  into a stand-alone field recorder, but also into a multichannel live player for previous recordings, e. g. for virtual sound checks. Live concerts, band rehearsals or spontaneous jam sessions can be recorded and played back from the medium – even stand-alone without computer or software. All 60 input and output channels can be individually chosen for recording and playback.

The Fireface UFX records the pure input signals as well as the effect processed mixer outputs in any combination, at up to 192 kHz. The channels to be recorded can be selected directly at the unit or in TotalMix FX. Playback supports up to 30 channels, either into the UFX outputs or the TotalMix FX inputs, enabling a post-processing of the audio data with EQ, Dynamics and Echo/Reverb.

The UFX writes standard multichannel WAV files to the USB memory. Despite the fact that nearly all common audio programs (e. g. Pro Tools, Nuendo, Cubase, Sonar, Samplitude) can load these files directly into their projects, a special Mac software – the RME Splitter – for splitting them into individual wav files can be downloaded from the RME website. The Windows version will be available soon.

The UFX USB recorder can be operated directly at the unit via the display. Additionally the Recorder is found in the TotalMix FX software user interface on both Mac and Windows PC. From the mixer software all Recorder settings and state displays can be overviewed, files can be selected, and channels can be selected for record and playback function by simple mouse clicks. The whole configuration and setup can then be stored in a Workspace file.

The new driver and firmware with Direct USB Recording is available on the RME website. The update also adds mono (single) channel hardware outputs to the TotalMix mixer view and the channel menu of the unit, real-time operation view in the Compressor graphics, Cue buttons to listen to any outputs, several new MIDI remote functions and options, and other improvements.
