    M-Audio Keystation 49ePublished on 02/08/09 at 16:57
When I bought the M-Audio Keystation 49e I was looking for a simple MIDI controller that I could hook up to my computer to control various virtual instruments. It connects to your computer USB and both pitch and modulation wheels. It has an output for sustain as well.

    UTILIZATION

The action of the 49e is pretty clean. While I am not a keyboard player by trade, it feels good to play and is easy to control overall. I like the configuration of this controller because it is easy and to the point. It works exactly what I use it for and works without problem. I am running this on a Mac Book Pro that has a 2.2 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo processor and 4 GB of RAM. I run it both in Logic and with…

I like the configuration of this controller because it is easy and to the point. It works exactly what I use it for and works without problem. I am running this on a Mac Book Pro that has a 2.2 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo processor and 4 GB of RAM. I run it both in Logic and with stand alone plugins like Native Instruments Elektrik Piano & B4. I don't have a manual so I don't know how thorough it is, but if you can install it without any issues, it should be pretty smooth sailing.

    OVERALL OPINION

I've had the Keystation 49e for about three years and it has done everything I bought it for. I am able to control virtual instruments at ease, providing me with a MIDI work station with vase capabilities. I also have an M-Audio Oxygen 8 and while that has more parameters, I prefer having the extra keys on the 49e and the parameters on the Oxygen 8 really just makes things from confusing in my opinion. The price of the 49e is one of the best parts, as just about anyone can have a great sounding MIDI keyboard rig with this a few virtual instruments at a very reasonable price. I'm extremely happy with this product and recommend it as a cheap solution for those looking to explore MIDI on their computer.

Its not supposed to have knobs and sliders so there isnt anything missing. it allows you to change octaves for those who are worried that the keys may not be enough, so you can play higher or lower. It has a pitch bend wheel and a modulation wheel, along with a volume slider.

    Price paid

    $99

    UTILIZATION

You just plug in the usb cable and you're set. if you have windows you dont even need drivers. cant get much easier than that.

Solid enough to not get damaged, unless you try to do something intentionally. the keys should hold up very well under normal playing.

    OVERALL OPINION

Although the 49e keeps it basic, what it lacks in knobs it makes up for in what's important. You have the ability to switch between higher and lower octives, and a pitch bend/mod wheel lets you give your sounds a twist. All in all, the functions it provides are solid.

    Price paid

    $110

This is my ONLY problem with M-Audio keyboards in general... the keys are just TOO STIFF. Does anybody else feel the same way? I always see M-Audios getting fantastic reviews, "great for the price" and so-on, but I'm not very pleased with the feel of the keys while you play and record. I've used numerous keyboards that have a soft feel which makes the music you create just flow …

I always see M-Audios getting fantastic reviews, "great for the price" and so-on, but I'm not very pleased with the feel of the keys while you play and record. I've used numerous keyboards that have a soft feel which makes the music you create just flow better... it improves your tempo accuracy. The keys are simply uncomfortable.

I have no complaints about this products durability. I've never needed a repair, BUT I HAVE experienced latency which I can't blame entirely on the keyboard alone.

    OVERALL OPINION

The sound quality is above average, and it's an aspect of the keyboard I honestly can't complain about.

I don't love this keyboard lol. I've disliked the feel of the keys since I purchased it, and I'm currently trying to figure out what the heck I should invest in next...

Nothing is missing if you take into account that the 49e is supposed to be a 49 key midi keyboard.

    Price paid: $99.99

    UTILIZATION

No drivers were needed. I don't need a power chord. Just plug it into the usb and I was ready to go. As easy as one can expect.

I've had it almost for a year now and have had no problems. Only a few surface scratches from storing it for a few months. It only affected the keyboard cosmetically.

    OVERALL OPINION

I couldn't produce without it, and a bigger keyboard wouldn't fit in my studio. So for me it's perfect.
