Connecting focusrite scarlett 2i2 to ipad

Hi, I have a focusrite Scarlett 2i2 and have seen on YouTube etc people connecting it to an iPad, when I connect using a USB to lightning adaptor with it plugged in to power it says there isn’t enough power to run it. Have I missed a step or am I doing something wrong?
