Published on 06/18/12 at 05:44Hybrid amp, other crap already have the technical description of this amp before me.
Small detail: The 12AX7 preamp has 3 instead of 2 for DB751 (following the model that replaces the DB750) because I think I read that the lamps on the DB750 tended to crack easily if you do not leave lamps properly cool before transporting.
Point Positive:
+ Simplicity
+ Appearance (perfect blend of modern and vintage)
+ Solid
Negatives:
- Speakon outputs only (ok it gets the standard but still some old cabs are still only in Jack, it requires appropriate cables in the event along with a backline already present on site, for example)
- Weight (it weighs a dead donkey)
- No line output jack (well it's not super important since we will still rarely play headphone with such a device but sometimes it helps out if you do not practice at home or something kind)
UTILIZATION
Very simple config. While it sounds already at noon with a big potato. It is far from fighter aircraft that require an adjustment period.
SOUNDS
I tested it with my band of Stoner rock and my group of Metalcore. In two cases, I disintegrated the mix!
Stoner Group 1: Gain thoroughly cruncher to lamps and light bass boost (there are two switches for buffs - treble and bass - in addition to the 3-band eq) that sounds absolutely hell with a stingray which brings one hand clapping but with a large depth in the bass with a nice thick crunch well.
Metalcore Group 2: Gain very light for a more clean. the two switch boost activated and medium slightly increased. I play an Ibanez BTB705 DX. Here we get a really powerful and deep growl (highlighted by the large sustain of the bass: p) The only thing he lacks is a good overdrive to get sick of watermelon: D (I think m provide an AGRO Aguilar to complete this config)
In short, despite the limited settings, this amp is capable of a lot! Like what, no need to have a war factory to be effective!
OVERALL OPINION
I have my head for a few weeks and I'm already in love. I bought it with the 4x10 Aguilar also (GS410) which has a nice presence and a big range of bass. This cab is pretty impressive too!
I tried quite a few heads as the common 3 SVT, SVT Classic, Trace Elliot GP7, Ashdown ABM 500, I may say that the Aguilar DB750 still plays in a different category ... (Although I have not tested a lot of amps )
The only major disadvantage is its weight (even if for a tube amp / hybrid are not too many miracle, the lamp puts it) that does not allow me to use it with my 2 groups (or so I finished with herniated disc in 2 years)
No value for money to see here. It is expensive but it's a bomb and if it all over again, I would buy again this amp head!
