Historically, since my first bass and I will not change!
I use my 40-100 G & L JB2 (fretless epoxy) in 35-90 on my Steinberger Q4 (Newburgh USA) and 45-105 on my Jazz Bass (Homemade) and all other low as I have owned in the past.
I tried several other brands but none have satisfied me as much as the Rotosound, yet over 20 years "what I lost like dough" to try other brands which ultimately were disappointing me. (Possibly at Elixir Ernie ball and I liked some models but no more, although Ernie Ball 2835 are very attractive, I highly recommended to those who like the sweetest strings).
You want a sound to Pastorius, John Entwistle, Sting, John Deacon, etc etc its powerful, manly, warm, direct, well rounded, sexy mediums wish ?? Provided that you do not mind a few blocks to the fingers, Rotosound are for you!
It's true they are rappers in the beginning but it fades quickly and the more you play the more the rope gaining playability! Basically there be a mandatory break-in period to get the maximum satisfaction, but after that slides alone and whatever the shooting.
I keep my "Swing Bass 66" + - 6 months before they lose their shine, with certain brands for double the price, my strings were rinsed after 1 month!
We love it not like finally all tastes are in nature! But Rotosound proven over decades, they are a true reference!
This is not "ready", their qualities deserve by killing some fingers a few hours, but then it is only pure happiness! all for a very reasonable price (+ - 20-25 €).
-setting update: I am 99% of agreements with the opinion of Beheroth for the quality of "Swing Bass 66" (forgetting about the for slap ...) ==> to use the information I also for slap on Steinberger (with adapter) and I'm not disappointed !!
