«  Very good and discreet »

Published on 05/25/13 at 04:43
Channel strip 1U rack.
Ability to pass a second analog channel to the output S / PDIF, which transforms the beast A / D converter stereo.
For the rest, cf. previous opinions.

UTILIZATION

Manuel Spartan but adequate (that I remember). Overall, for professionals, the beast is still very easy to use, even if you always take a little time to enjoy the color of the compressor and possibly the "iron" function.

Finally, a little more to the strength of the beast, that not Racké has stood without flinching dozens of travel by car, train, rer, and so on ...

SOUND QUALITY

Working only in sound classical / jazz, I was a few years ago looking for discrete preamps, versatile enough because of the cost, and easily transportable. Since then I have gradually shifted to the Millennia, the Universal Audio and Rupert Neve (cleanliness of its forces), but I always kept my six q for some colors on light voice, baroque instruments.
While at the preamp, there are many more things "couillues", with more flexibility, the EQ is a bit light, and with only 3 channels quickly limited and finally compression lose too accuracy, or downright too when she is not well tamed. But it is nevertheless a really interesting sound, both warm, delicate and discreet, in a very musical word of classical or jazz, accompanied by A / D converters of good quality (it is well worth the RME obviously not Mytek or Prism, but for most projects, it is enough).

After that, I totally understand that people looking for a real change of sound (the lamp Type Avalon) do not find their account or other hoping for a miracle sound are frustrated by the six q but good, is that these people are well aware that this is just a preamp with optical compressor 400 euros new? I'm not so sure ...

OVERALL OPINION

Used extensively in the first two years, much less now (especially since I went to the UAD plugs, and I prefer, for simplicity, all my work in digital color), it is in my opinion a great start for mono preamp with everything you could possibly need for an audio plug unbeatable bargain price (200 euros for all that, it's still awesome).
I do not sell through this rather peculiar color, which I more than once saved on the metal too lyrical voice and harpsichord / lutes too hard. Now, we must also accept its limitations, and how to use it not as a box to do everything, but as one factor among others in a chain of hardware.
