You load it up, and you're running. The menus for choosing audio devices are very straightforward, and as long as you have a working knowledge of computers and audio device selection, you will not be left scratching your head like many of us were for the first few hours we played with Cubase.

It loads up quickly, and you're ready to go. Essentially, there is nothing cumbersome about loading up Audacity at all. The nice thing about it being very light is that it also doesn't feel like a massive commitment to start the program. With other programs, you have to sit in the splash screen for half of a minute before you can even come close to getting anywhere. It's very convenient for laying down an idea.

SUITABILITY/PERFORMANCE

Audacity is very stable; you just have to be patient when applying processing or plugins. Audacity lacks any sort of inserts that can be applied and switched around and modified on the fly, which means that you just essentially have to apply effects in a certain order and create more backup tracks than you should.

I think that if you know what you're doing, and are patient enough to wait for Audacity to apply the processing every time, you don't lose out. It also forces you to end up with a lighter CPU load while playing.

It's a limitation I can't live with, however, so I don't use Audacity other than to lay down ideas. For someone who is more inexperienced, it's a great way to understand plugins and their functions.

OVERALL OPINION

Audacity is a fantastic program that can be downloaded entirely for free. It may be light on features; that's to be expected from a free program, but it certainly possesses everything that is needed to mix any sort of audio. It's built in plugins are fantastically simple to use, and it's probably advised that anyone just getting into audio mixing and editing begin in Audacity.

What it lacks in features, it makes up for in intuitiveness and straightforwardness. Audacity cannot be faulted because it's free and comprehensive. For basic function, it may even trump some of the expensive DAWs out there. Obviously, Audacity will never be a full featured or comprehensive as some of the industry standard DAWs like ProTools, Sonar, Cubase, or Logic, but for simple waveform editing and absolute base-level mixing, you CANNOT go wrong with Audacity.

The fact that it is free just sweetens the deal a bunch more.

Installation: After you check the "audacity" in synaptic package manager, is applied, all done alone. (Recovery program and installation)

SUITABILITY/PERFORMANCE

I use audacity on two computers one G31TM MSI-P21 / E6600 / 2Gio / 2x500 GB RAID1 / ECHO Audiofire 12 / Ubuntu 10.10 and 64-bit tests on TYAN S2915 / Bi-Quad Opteron 2356 / 2Gio (later 4Gio then 20 Gio / 4x500 GB RAID10 / ECHO Audiofire 12 / 64 bit Ubuntu 10.10.

The software works fine, however, seems to run with 1 processor on 8 ... I will seek the ability to compile software to run eight cores, history of applying effects to eight times faster, but I feel that it is not multithreaded. (I could be wrong)

Version 1.2.6 is the stable version for early 2011.

OVERALL OPINION

I'm using this software since about 2003. (Towards the beginning, earlier versions)

I summarize this software by the qualifier Swiss Army knife with over 300 sound effects.
I hope the next version after 1.3.12 exploit better multicore, multiprocessor when we see processors as the MSLT-GX100 (with 100 cores at 1.5 GHz 8 times more powerful than a quad Xeon 5500 does consuming only 55W ...).

I tried several programs, I am best suited to Audacity.

I am happy audacity, however, I am using Ardour Audacity also does not seem as manage the control surfaces in addition to MIDI.

I think Audacity is an excellent software under the GPL.

This program works flawlessly on almost any computer, it really is not demanding at all. I have used it on a low end computer (1.8GHZ pentium and 1gb ram) as well as my current (2.5GHZ Core2Quad & 4GB ram) and it runs equally on both. This software is pretty much nothing though. It is alright for amateur quick recording of basic things but anything more than that and it becomes a totally pointless adventure through an audio time machine. Avoid unless you are totally amateur and new to audio editing and production. The effects that come with it are cheap thrills that will keep you interested for less time than a twenty one year old virgin lasts on his first go.

This software works admirably on any computer. It's pretty stable, I don't think theres anything in it that can actually crash as it is that sparse! The CPU load is pretty low, mainly because it does absolutely nothing except record (the only thing it is somewhere close to good at). Memory usage is extremely low mainly because there is again, nothing to it except cheap effects and basic recording. I have actually tried recording through stereo mix into this program and it failed at that, distorting and amplifying anything that came through my soundcard to on the verge of unlistenable.

OVERALL OPINION

I like most the fact that it is not mandatory to use in music production. I like most the fact it is only 2 mb and I wasted no time at all bothering to install or even try it. This review may seem very harsh as it does actually do what it is meant to do, but anyone remotely serious about recording music is not going to touch this program at all. The quality that comes out of it is borderline youtube quality, even when recorded directly from soundcard!

Avoid at mortal peril.

Audacity was easy to set up. You just have to download the version for your system and you're set. The online manual was easy and clear to follow. It wasn't hard to figure out in the first place. The general configuration was simple. The record button, new track, cutting and pasting, etc. It was all easy to figure out. All its functions are easy to access and use and I was very successful using it.

The software works very well. It's default configuration is exactly what you need and nothing should really be changed unless you know what you're doing. The program is very stable and hardly lags. The performance of Audacity is very good overall. it has a high sample rate which makes the program very stable and ideal. I downloaded it when I got my laptop, which was about a year ago, and it's still great.

OVERALL OPINION

What I love about this program is how it's so professional and full of tools and it's completely free. It's great for recording and editing. You can't make instrumentals with it, but if you're an aspiring rapper or singer and you have instrumentals already, you can just record on Audacity and edit it with very professional tools. Sometimes Audacity isn't so great. There are some tools that it doesn't offer that other softwares have, but other than some of those, Audacity is one of the best recording softwares out there and it's completely free, which is still shocking. The price of Audacity couldn't be any better. It could only be better if they paid you to download it. The precision and quality of the sound when exporting is as good as the quality of your microphone is. If you recorded with an amazing microphone with amazing quality, then the sound of Audacity will be outstanding. Audacity's sound doesn't top expensive softwares but it's still very good. Audacity was my first recording program after GarageBand, and i found it to be way better. You should definitely go download Audacity for free and check it out yourself. You'll be amazed.

Audacity 1.2 Freeware is a digital audio editor and sequencer that is free for all users. I had no compatibility issues with my configuration, as this software is offered for all types of set ups. The interface of the software is very easy to follow, as it really just has the basic functions you look for in a digital audio editor like this. I don't have a manual for this, but I think you can probably download one when you download the software. However, if you have any previous experience with software of this nature, you won't need a manual as it is straightforward and easy to operate.

I have run Audacity on two different systems. One is a Mac Book Pro that has a 2.2 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo processor and 4 GB of RAM, and the other is a Hewlett Packard Pavilion dv8000 lap top that has a 3.0 Ghz processor and 2 GB of RAM. On both of these computers I have never had a problem running a good amount of tracks with effects in this software. It has always run stable, even though I haven't ever had the need to run more than six or eight tracks at once within this software.

OVERALL OPINION

I've been using Audacity 1.2 for about three years or so, and have found it useful for those looking for a piece of freeware software that has all the powerful options that digital audio editing offers. This is probably the best free piece of software in terms of digital audio, and is great for new users to get their feet wet with digital audio before upgrading to something more powerful like Apple Logic or Pro Tools. Overall, highly recommended to those looking for digital audio software but don't want to pay, or want to just get their feet wet with digital audio.
