« Fender Standard Jazz Bass »
Published on 06/27/01 at 15:00I bought the Fender Standard Jazz bass guitar at Guitar Center (Houston, TX) for $350. Frankly, I bought this particular bass guitar because of its price. I also own an Ibanez 300DX Soundgear bass guitar, and I wanted to have another bass to add to the versatility of my music. My Soundgear's fret board has also begun to warp, and I felt that it was time to buy another bass guitar.
First off, the Fender Jazz Bass has an incredibly smooth neck. Although wider than the Ibanez Soundgear's neck, I find that I am able to play the same licks that I have always played with the same amount of ease. What I also love about the Fender Jazz Standard is its fuller bass tone. While not all of the songs and music I play require the deep low end sound that the Fender Jazz Bass puts out, it is very nice having the option available when I need it.
One weakness of the Fender Jazz Bass is that it does not put out the "pop" needed for slap bass playing. Of course, this can always be remedied by changing the pickups in the bass. I also found the Fender Jazz Bass to be a little heavier than I was accustomed too. Of course, given that Ibanez Soundgears are some of the lightest basses on the market, anything else would seem heavy and bulky.
Rosewood fingerboard; offset-waist body; bi-pole pickups
Overall, I am very happy with the Fender Jazz bass. For $350, it was a STEAL. Fender has had a long tradition and reputation as being one of the premier guitar, bass, and amplifier manufacturers. The Fender Jazz Standard Bass helps to solidify that reputation.
