MGR/Billy « Squier Vintage Modified Mustang »
Published on 11/21/11 at 15:00Squier hit a home run with their latest Classic Vibe and Vintage Modified lines. They are basically taking the Squiers and souping them up to fall somewhere in between a regular Squier and a classicly worn Fender.
I am the weirdo that hears on the internet that a new model is coming out and I'll stalk all local music stores until it shows up! That was no different with the Vintage Modified Mustang. I did not buy this $279 instrument because I could not justify buying another cheaper bass, but I will do my best to relay my thoughts on it from my 45 minute demo of it.
It is a funky little short scale in a day and age when there aren't many on the market. The bass is super light and boasts a 30' scale and a 19 fret neck.
The Vintage Modifieds all feature a satin finished neck. I do not prefer it over the glossy finish of the Classic Vibe line. You see you can always sand down a glossy neck for a smooth satin finish, but sadly it doesn't work the other way without a great deal of work.
The body is made of basswood. The neck is maple on maple. The model I played was sunburst, I believe it also comes in black. They kept the retro looking bridge and tiny Precision pickup like the original. The pickup like most of the newer Squiers is a Duncan designed pickup and does well with the bass.
The truth is the original Fender Mustangs from the 60s and 70s were made as 'junkier' budget instruments, Squier nailed the feel and sound of the classic! Great for younger bassists or beginners with smaller hands.
