SUITABILITY/PERFORMANCE

OVERALL OPINION

I use it for one week.
It runs super fast and I have not seen a bug. The interface is beautiful and functions are sufficient. I compare it to Cubase and Sonar, which he did not blush. Reaper certainly has fewer features than the two gloves, but what he does, he does it better bcp! Everything works better and is more enjoyable to use. Yes, it runs without worry, and it seems that the use of CPU resources is more efficient than Cubase. Cubase, my PC was struggling to run a Pianoteq BFD2 + + + Yellow Tools Majestic else in audio (from 1 to 4 tracks guitars, or vocals, effects). The same pieces in Reaper, I take a look at the performance, and he still room (a lot of room, even).

Quite good, even excellent. My experience was limited to Cubase, so I can not speak over other software. Reaper meets my expectations, and returns the Steinberg developers to their current programming.

Flawless installation, fast and without difficulty on Windows XP, Win 7 and under Wine with Jack Wineasio and in different versions of Linux: Ubuntu Studio 8, 10 and whose variants tangostudio KX studio, Fedora 12.

The general configuration does not seem very difficult but it is true that I am beginning to know by heart. We must above all learn and know the principles of ASIO for recording in real time and without latency multitrack, and effects plugins (VST, including but not only), instruments (VSTi) and you begin to s and to acknowledge.

The interface is intuitive as for multitrack magneto I've ever had: there are tracks, must be cocked, determine where it makes the sound that you hear the track etc..

VAIO Athlon 2X II 340, 4 GB RAM, Toneport UX1, UX2 sometimes (but it has blown somewhere and not work well), and 4 USB Multimix.

In Win 7, UbuntuStudio 8.04, Fedora CCRMA XII, TANGOSTUDIO, KX STUDIO ... I put everything in the multiboot, while running with the Multimix (no usable driver for Linux Toneport, yuck)

Correct performance without more, I think 3.4, but I do not know the scale.

Works flawlessly, very few bugs, except when I forget to start first and run Qjackctrl Wineasio. Once started, impeccable, whatever my track count and VST more or less heavy.

Stable configuration, never freezes or crashes in these conditions.

OVERALL OPINION

I REAPER for at least three years after finding that Audacity was not really a multitrack recording software.

I tested various other, sometimes as simple as a demo version but never paying expensive software. Linux, for free there are things like, "almost" as well (Ardour + Rosegarden + Jack ... etc.)

I like everything: cheap, powerful, intuitive, multi-platform and OS, but receives many VST is already equipped with the essentials to turn. And install on an external drive or a USB key, as very lightweight and well written.

Like less withdrawals versions all the time because I have to upgrade my OS and all configurations can be different if I do not take care.

The trial version not restrained, with 5 seconds delay at startup to remind that this is a demo is free! ! We do not share the best free software. The paid version is less personal than a game console: unbeatable value for money in my opinion.

With experience, I would first hand over Ardour free, or I would start testing REAPER free to give me a hand, and I would resume a license because I have not found anything better yet.

I realized I was using Cubase as an empty shell, a place to run plugins.
Reaper does it as well, or even better. You can route anything to anywhere.
I got tired of 4.7Gb installations. Reaper is like a 4mb zip file, and you can make it portable, running from a small usb drive.
I can teach and give it to interested people, with a nice collection of free plugins that are so common now on the web. And it's included plugins are really powerful.

But remember, you can use it without any restriction, but it's not really free, if it becomes an important tool you should pay the small amount they ask for it (I did, and I feel fine).

I love small, cheap, good and non-intrusive software.

Tried it on 5 or 6 different computers, no problems at all.
With QuataFire 610, FastTrackPro, IndigoDJ or Asio4all, always perfect!!!
It is skinable, and it adapts to big or small screens, even on mini laptops.

OVERALL OPINION

As good as the big expensive sequencers, but small, portable, big user base and constantly updated.
I can use it as my main audio sequencer.

This program is great! Just wanted to say that first. It installs with no problem. You can download the installer for free from Cockos' website. I had no compatibility issues with my system. The configuration goes fairly in depth, but if you don't care that much about optimizing your software perfectly, it doesn't need to get very complicated. The manual is provided digitally, and is extremely thorough. Even though this program is free, you are not getting short changed on the quality of the program and documentation.

I have my own custom built system. It's an intel motherboard and dual core processor, with 4GB of RAM and plenty of hard drive space. I also run Windows XP for my operating system. Reaper works great on my computer. It very rarely gets sluggish unless I am really using a ridiculous amount of plug-ins. Reaper itself has a small memory footprint, and seems to be coded very efficiently. It is also very stable. It does crash from time to time just like any audio program will, but it is a small amount when compared to some of its big name competitors.

OVERALL OPINION

I have been using Reaper for the past couple years when I switched away from Cakewalk's Sonar. Sonar was also great, but I felt that Reaper was just as good, and it's free! Obviously my favorite thing about it is the price, but the workflow and general layout design of the interface is very intuitive and easy to learn. It is also becoming more widely supported by third party plug-in developers as time goes. Beyond that, almost every VST plug-in I have tried to use with Reaper has worked, and in most cases when there is a problem, it is something that you can deal with like a graphical error. Cockos also includes some high quality plug-ins of their own design to get you started with a good collection if you are new to digital audio. The value is amazing, considering the price of $0. I plan to keep using Reaper for the foreseeable future.
