« Ibanez EDB 605 »
Published on 09/01/02 at 15:00I bought this bass unseen from musiciansfriend.com. I meticulously researched and considered a variety of different 5-string basses including models by Fender, Spector, Yamaha, Tobias, Carvin, and others by Ibanez and decided to get this one. Looking back on it, I don't know why exactly I chose this one over others, but some reasons were the price and good reviews.
The action and feel of this bass is fantastic. The active electronics easily provide vastly different sounds with the twist of a knob. The B string is very solid (something hard to find on a bass in this price range with a 34" scale). The cut into the body under the D and G strings is very useful for slapping. Lastly, this bass is built very solidly...you could smash it into a wall and I don't think it would be very damaged.
It's as heavy as it is sturdy, which can be a pain if you're playing standing up for a long time. Also, the paint or the finish or something has a chemical smell that can be kind of annoying.
Like I said before, it's very solid and heavy. I did find out the hard way that the paint can be rubbed off (a small speck on the bottom caused by my belt, I think). One serious problem that I had is that for some reason the bridge won't lower itself enough. In other words, the action is so good and low that the bridge won't go low enough to accomadate it (all the strings are lowered to their max, but there is still no buzzing). My friend told me I should saw down the nut, but I haven't tried that yet. I have had no problems with any of the parts coming loose or anything like that.
I am very happy with this bass. It has an amazing feel to it and can produce a variety of sounds. However, if I had a second chance I would have just bought one of the cheaper Ibanez soundgear basses like the SR 405 or something. The only real difference is the material of the body, which is solid and has the cut in for slapping, but is also very heavy. It's not really worth the extra money.
