The most basic of all is when doing a final mix, IF and I do mean IF you have gotten your tracks right in the first place (which is quite an assumption) use a competent stereo compressor to add punch to the final mix. I prefer a gentle 2:1 ratio with a fairly conservative attack time (about 50ms) and a reasonable release time (about 120-160ms). The results I've experienced this way has been wonderful.
