Everything has been said or almost ... I refer to the manufacturer's data:
Stereo digital sampler twelve o'clock
16bit linear coding
Sample Rate 44.1 khz
22.05 kHz
Internal Memory: 2MB expandable to 32 MB (SIMM 70ns recommended 2x 16mo. Barettes of 8 MB not recommended) or 48 mo (32 simm + 2 x 8 MB Flash ROM, maintained after termination of the device. Reference Component: Extended fmx008 )
Polyphony: 32 voices
Maximum number of samples: 255
Maximum number of programs: 254
A low pass digital filter (with resonance -12dB/octave)
2 envelope generators digital (1 multi segments)
2 lfo
graphic display 8 lines 16 characters backlit
3.5-inch floppy drive (which some users have replaced by a Zip drive or compact flash)
connectors: rec in: 2 x 6.35 symmetrized Stero out jacks: 2 x Plugs 6.35 (Unbalanced). headset trio noon SCSI 25 p "Amphenol"
Editing software for Mac MESA. (SCSI connection)
Options:
FMX008: memory expansion card ROM Pulse 8 MB
IB208P: I / O digital outputs and 8 parallel
IB304F: Map filter second large-scale integration
EB16: map multiple effects processor.
UTILIZATION
Configuration very simple. Few buttons, a scroll wheel. To load programs, load is selected, we choose the source, floppy or scsi, it selects the program, and it went away. (It has previously selected the index scsi SCSI device with which you will connect dan sle menu "global", that is called with a dedicated button)
Like most samplers from this period (all?) Impossible to PFL sounds before loading.
The loading time is acceptable.
French manual very clear.
Edition made difficult by the smallness of the screen. Otherwise the editor via scsi and MESA is comparable to VSTi.
The fans love samplers and it is normal to judge such a machine with options to crushing of sample and this is normal. But I attract attention to the fact that a reader of samples compatible with the libraries in AKAI it is already very interesting. With 32 MB is already low load some sounds. The batteries sound great in this sampler. And given his side more than on occasion underestimated (like all the samplers in fact ...)
To save its settings, however, we must use a peripheral of Storage external scsi hard drive up to 512 MB or Zip or SyQuest or new systems Compact Flash memory cards scsi.
Otherwise it will record your sounds in your sequencer to recharge at the next sitting.
SOUNDS
The converters are the same as the s and s3200xl 3000XL. It seems better than the s1000 (with whom I recalled, bcp's securities trade have been partially achieved at the time)
I did a comparison with an EMU e5000. Both samplers sound differently. But one does not sound more pro than the other. They have personality. as sound banks are compatible between both emu akai with vsti that I highly recommend this tempted by this unit or one of those colleagues ... From 60/90 euros is really a case. Provided you have a scsi cd rom drive
Map effect was deemed average. anyway be less than the already installed in the machine, it should not be a criterion. It is best to stick an external effect.
OVERALL OPINION
I used the last 10 years. it's sturdy, reliable, it crashes ever.
I've used the S5000 in the studio, more practice more memory, faster to use, but its almost the same level. I also compared with the Emu 5000, very different. They complement each other very well. j eaussi used a roland sp606 for live but I think it's a product rather different.
The feature that I like most is a quality Raport unbeatable price. Access to libraries legendary AKAI, compatibility and roland emu (even if all parameters are not taken into account)
Small defects now: No preview of sounds before loading: importence saw the stock samples, be it little longer to choose a bass! some manage their sound banks with software such as CD and xtract preecoutent on the computer but often when we do that we remain in vsti ...)
Also, the OS is loaded depui Sune diskette. it's a little pinball. It is advisable to have one or more copies of secu, and maybe a copy on a zip boot has to be used externally.
To be interesting it is imperative to have 32 MB of memory, and a cdrom drive akai. It is also imperative to have a minimum sound bank format, transfer them or anything.
In the time the price was good value for c was the only way to get a sampler of power rmoins 10000Francs.
Today this is great value for money for the musician. for the programmer, tempted by the sirens of virtually free vsti some, it's a matter of taste. and opportunity.
With J will experience repeated the same choice given the price of the era.
Aujourdui, if I did not already had one, I charge an Akai S 5000 or S 6000, and a series of EMU E4-hand, and will not take an s2000 if my budget was very limited, studio b or as a reader of additional samples.
