1 Post Processing Vocal
I'm using Acid Music Studio 5.0 to post-process a live vocal recording (no instruments) and burn them to CD. I have had some complaints in the past that the level was too low on the playback, so I just increased the track volume. It is normally set to something like -7.2 dB and I push it up to +2.0 dB. The final product doesn't seem to be clipping, so I've just been going with it and not asking questions--until now...

My question is, what is an appropriate level (dB) that a recording should be? With Music Studio, I don't think I've got anything better than logging a peak value (although I'm not a guru), so I've just been trying to eyeball the average and get it around -6.0 dB on the master volume meters. Is that the right thing to do? Is the level specific to the software, or is it a setting that would be true of any software I use?

Maybe this is a software question rather than general recording.

Thanks.
