A studio engineer friend has an alesis HD24 recording system. What would be need to allow him to record on PC using cubase or similar. Can the alesis function as an external sound card or would he need to buy a 24 analogue in sound card eg motu. I guess if that was the case the alesis would be redundant.
Thanks

Yes, you'd need a soundcard with as many inputs as you need. Many users have the hd24 connected via ADAT optical cables to something like the RME Raydat card, which gets you 24 inputs and outputs to and from your hd24 and your computer. Super low latency and rock solid drivers.
I have started a dedicated forum for the hd24 here: http://hd24.wholetonesound.com
