I am both musician and singer, and in a pinch, I'll do the sound.
Apart from the usual things common to most designs, I find that the most useable equipment are one's ears.

If you can't hear the problem you can't fix it.
This includes how to discern the voice;
There is a high, mid and low to the human voice.
It applies to instruments.
