Novice adding sound effects to a school play with laptop needs help

Hi,
I'm using a Dell laptop with the headphone jack to connect up to a 1/4 inch mike imput on a behringer mixer to add sound effects during a school play. The problem is I'm getting interference noise as a high decibel constant sound when the unit is plugged in. Any ideas how to correct? Both the computer and all of the sound equipment is plugged into a rack mounted power supply. Thanks

The 1/8" headphone out on most laptops could almost qualify for line level. Get a 1/8" stereo to 1/4" Y-cable and connect that to a stereo line input, not mic input, on the Behringer.
