help! guitar not recgonised on my PC

wondering if anyone can help.
got myself a guitar to pc cable the other day, so i could play my guitar on the computer.
i have it plugged into the Line In port at the moment, but when i try to record it in Goldwave, my sound editor, it cannot be recgonised.
What do i do?
