I want to record my string trio - violin, viola, and cello. This is very basic, just for us to see how we sound. I don't have much money to spend, but I'd like to get equipment that will be useful later if I start really getting into home recording, and maybe if we want to put some music on our web page for potential customers to listen to.

I have a Mac Mini, which only has firewire and USB ports. I'd like to mic each instrument, and have it record onto a different track if possible. So my question is, if I get 3 USB microphones, and plug them all in, will it record them to separate tracks? Or will I need some kind of an interface to make this work? Because if I'm getting an interface of some type, I guess I don't need to worry about getting USB microphones.

You can see I'm quite new at all this. This morning, I was looking into buying a digital handheld recorder!

Thanks for all the help,
JoAnne

how's this for cheap:

why not just use a simple pc mic and start by recording in overdub?

it means, record instrument 1.

then record instrument 2

then instrument 3... etc... until you have all of them

then simply mixdown then whole track.
