1 Full home studio set up
Hello all!

I did some research since few years and saving money to invest in a lasting on long term home studio configuration. Until now, I produced with a simple studio configuration with my computer, soft, midi keyboard and VST only.

I produce mainly techno/IDM/ambient…

It’s maybe important to precise the type of music I want to approach related to the machines choices. I also would like to do some live session.

Here, is the studio set up I would like to do. I putted some options for some elements or machines. Could you please help me to select the most better related to my style utilisation and budget? I would like something versatile, pro quality.

(To make sample outside)

-A compressor, multi machines effects to advise? Others types of important machines I didn’t selected?

-Could you please tell me if everything is coherent? If for the same budget I have to select other better machines, for example the mixer, microphone, synth or keyboard?

-For a sampler, better to buy a brand new or old model likes the legendary MPC60?

-Is there is a real difference with the two soundcard? If I can save a bit of money on it by taking an SPL Crimson instead of the RME which is really expensive.

-For the drums machines and synths, I selected different options to have more possibilities; I will probably by few for each type of machines. Maybe certain are better or didn’t have to buy all of them if they do double use?

-Some gears to advise to produce IDM/Ambient?

Thanks you for your help!

That is why i mentioned the in box approach.
If he connect all his analog gear directly to his interface he can make the mix with his daw, save multiple mixes and choose the best.

On the other hand i also like to work with hands on gear rather than the soft preamps, emulations and other software based material. I don't say i never use it but as little as possible.

I like to have direct control instead of flipping multiple screens to find that one button i need.. Call me old school :-D

So i understand him, but i also understand you Mike. And Perhaps in his case software is better and less expensive.

It's not about what you got to use ....    but how you use what you got...

Of course, it's totally a personal choice whether to include a lot of hardware in a studio. And I get why someone would prefer a hardware synth (especially an analog one), or has a high-end hardware compressor or EQ. If you can get significantly better quality by going out of the box, and you don't mind the inconvenience, then go for it. Otherwise, IMHO, it's much more advantageous to stay in the box. For something like a multieffects processor, I don't see any advantage to going outboard. Those kind of units are typically a real pain to use because you have to step through countless menus all the time, and the quality difference in most cases is negligible. Even for a mixing board, unless you've got a vintage Neve or something that will impart a real sound quality difference, better to mix in the box and get a DAW controller for the tactile aspects.
