Beginners
Very good distribution of Linux, it is confirmed for both lunixiens for beginners.
Ubuntu (http://www.ubuntu-fr.org)
- Before installation you can download Ubuntu: Ubuntu DL (ftp://ubuntu.univ-nantes.fr/ubuntu-cd/edgy) burn the CD image, then you can use this CD just to visit the environment without Ubuntu Linux system installation, which is a very good idea because people who do not know this distro can see how it works without taking the head!
- Installation on a PC is done with no worries.
Ubuntu DL (ftp://ubuntu.univ-nantes.fr/ubuntu-cd/edgy)
Just follow the instuctions. If you want a dual boot (for exmple, windows & linux) you have to install Windows first and then Ubuntu (if you do the opposite, windows overwrites GRUB [small program that lets you see the multiboot])
It is advisable to have an ethernet internet connection .... personal, I'm in and I usb galley just to configure my modem.
- Installation with MacInetl is a bit more complex, for the moment there is no version of Ubuntu that supports (actually) the two dual core ... but it will not be long, April 19 released a new version of Ubuntu.
If you are AFiens and want to discuss Ubuntu .... a single address: Pud of Ubunteros ( )
SUITABILITY/PERFORMANCE
As a goal of Linux is to create its own environment, just to know his every needs and install only what you need.
Do not install ubuntu when even if you have less than 256MB of RAM (hint read on the official website fr)
On this point a little update, Ubuntu Studio will be released soon, although a little late:
Ubuntu Sutio (http://ubuntustudio.org)
This distribution is based on the version of ubuntu Festy Fawn (7.04) and is entirely devoted to music and video. I think this one might interest many AFiens.
OVERALL OPINION
For me the value of ubuntu is to have a graphical interface that does not exist in some Linux distributions.
Ubuntero community is very friendly, the forum of the distro is quite active and answers to problems are usually quite clear.
Ubuntu Forum (http://forum.ubuntu-fr.org)
Remember that it is free software, here everyone brings his small stone to the building .....
