Very simple installation. Authorization of any simple (a simple key code to enter.)
It has four resonant filters which can individually enable or mute (LP, HP, BP, Peak, Notch, but also "Like Moog", Comb and Ring Modulator.) Very practical: A knob "Fatness" offers an automatic gain to prevent unwanted peaks due to resonance. For the ring modulator, this parameter becomes "Color" and adjusts the intensity of the effect. Each filter has a distortion, a pan, a volume, but also original and interesting, with a delay.
All parameters can be modulated by an LFO (ten waveforms possible), an envelope follower and an ADSR envelope generator. The "Expert" mode which lets you choose where the sound is taken from reference ("probes") and offers various settings, allows unprecedented control flexibility of the envelope follower and ADSR. It may sound complex, but it is greatly helped by small screens that show graphically and in real time the behavior of the modulators. Furthermore, all parameters can be controlled via midi.
The master offers three modes to manage the stereo and the "Expert" mode, all possible routing combinations are allowed.
Finally, we can "linker" between them delay settings and the cut-off (adjustable to determine how the bands are linked and spaced apart.)
Finally remember that as with all Ohm Force plug-ins, you can make here morphing between eight different presets. The entire Quad Frohmage is perfectly described in a manual clear and French should be read at least once to understand all the intricacies of it. But it is also supported by a large number of presets generally well done and interesting.
The only thing that may be lacking in the face of FabFilter Volcano, for example, is a graph that shows the action of the filters.
SUITABILITY/PERFORMANCE
This plug-in is a perfect stability and works fine on my Mac Pro (MacOS 10.6.8) with Digital Performer. CPU consumption is almost negligible.
OVERALL OPINION
I have the Quad Frohmage for many years. It is a tool of great finesse whose possibilities go well beyond those of its competitors, thanks to the presence of delays, distortion and powerful settings of modulators. In addition, these filters are of very high quality.
However, I have to admit that I do not use it very often. In fact, when I need a filtering effect or a simple classic wha-wha, I head to the generally rather Volcano2 of FabFilter or Sugar Bytes WOW, which are much more immediate set (see . my opinion on these products.) However, whenever I test the Quad Frohmage informally on a particular loop, I am amazed at the stunning results and new effects it can produce. But when I'm working on a piece, I either lack of opportunity to put these special effects, or I lack the time to get into these settings. But I do not despair and I continue to tell me that sooner or later I know enjoy its incredible power. I am so happy to still be available.
